European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 12, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday october 12. 1985 the stars and stripes Page 7 West coast shuttle payload is declassified Washington a the air Force has lifted the secrecy Label from its first Wesl coast space shuttle flight and disclosed the Mission of the two main experiments in the ship s cargo hold. One of the devices called Teal Ruby is an infrared space surveillance Experiment that the air Force said is designed to demonstrate detection of aircraft in sources said that includes cruise missiles. The other Experiment will test a sensor called Cirrus that eventually will help track ballistic missiles. The air Force said the sensor is designed to collect data on the Aurora and Earth it has been a badly kept secret that the inaugural flight from Vandenburg fab Calif., next March 20 would carry the two experiments. Maj. Ron Rand an air Force spokes Man said that since Teal Ruby and Cirrus arc experimental rather than operational we determined that disclosure of their identities and Mission would have a negligible effect on National an earlier version of the Cirrus a flown on the fourth Mission of the space shuttle in june 1982. It failed apparently because a Telescope cover did t open. Teal Ruby will share a satellite with three other experiments. Cirrus is one of six experiments mounted on a shuttle pallet that will be exposed to space during night then brought Back to Earth. Teal Ruby is described As a staring mosaic array a Detector that concentrates on a specific area of the Earth. The Detec tors sense infrared Energy which is then transformed to an image. The device is Able to swivel enabling the sensor to focus on a Point while the satellite orbits. After a detection attempt. Teal Ruby s Telescope can be slowed in the satellite. The air Force said the space lest involves 100 experiments. The device s life is limited by the Supply of sup cold chemicals needed to Cool its focal plane Assembly. Cirrus is an acronym for cryogenic Infra red radiance instrument for the shuttle. It will scan the horizon for background data to help future surveillance spacecraft select hostile ballistic missiles. The air Force chose Vandenberg fab 150 Miles Northwest of los Angeles for launching shuttles into Polar orbit. Shuttles launched to the cast from Kennedy space Center in Florida gel a boost from the Earth s rotation and go into an equatorial orbit. In order to Circle the Earth Over its poles shuttles from Florida would have to be launched Over heavily populated areas. From Vandenburg a shuttle can be launched to the South without flying Over populated land masses. The air Force envisions using the Van Denburg facility twice a year while the two launch pads at Kennedy space Center arc expected eventually to see 24 liftoff a year.
