One of the devices called Teal Ruby is an infrared space surveillance Experiment that the air Force said is designed to demonstrate detection of aircraft in  sources said that includes cruise missiles. The other Experiment will test a sensor called Cirrus that eventually will help track ballistic missiles. The air Force said the sensor is designed to collect data on the Aurora and Earth  it has been a badly kept secret that the inaugural flight from Vandenburg fab Calif., next March 20 would carry the two experiments. It failed apparently because a Telescope cover did t open. Teal Ruby will share a satellite with three other experiments. Cirrus is one of six experiments mounted on a shuttle pallet that will be exposed to space during night then brought Back to Earth. It will scan the horizon for background data to help future surveillance spacecraft select hostile ballistic missiles.
