European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 9, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Review Down Home Brunch in Frankfurt by sgt ret Clement Lounder Brunch is a meal that was thought up i think by some of your French theatre Type people Back in the Days when everyone was wearing powder and wigs and walking around with perfume hankies and silk socks and taking part in the National pastime which was leering. So even though Brunch is supposed to be a kind of Hearty combination of breakfast and lunch it has ended up that the courses Are almost always delicate Folk foods. We re talking stuff Tike ome lets and poached eggs and Hollan Daise sauce and Little bowls of Cream Cereal and on occasion some Toast. Or once in a while some kippers them Little whomp Type fish that can Only be caught in san Francisco Bay if you understand what i am saying and i bet you do. On top or All that most of your restaurants that serve Brunch serve it like it is a Buffet so All thai Whimpy food is parked out on steam tables and chafing dishes and after a couple hours we re talking about stuff that has the taste and consistency of a Gerber product. And Here Are All these people maybe coming out of Church or waking up late or maybe Suiter ing a Little from too much of the night before and ail of them Are looking or some Chow that is the aest of both meals and very Lew of them Are finding anything that is Worth their time. It is because most Brunch Type food is so bad that restaurants invented your Champagne Brunch and your Champagne Brunch with Dixieland Jyz jus to get some customers in there. Now All these problems really bother my buddy jumbo Perry because Brunch is one of his most favor Ite meals mainly because he is a fit tie confused about it All and thinks Brunch is a meal you can eat Between breakfast and lunch. 1 have tried to set him straight on this but he refuses to to think he enjoys wearing a size 67 Leisure suit. Anyway the Point of All this is to Tell you the King Creole soul food restaurant that me and jumbo found in Frankfurt the other week that does jumbo Perry Elaine Avila owner of King Creole restaurant in Frankfurt. Brunch like it should be done and docs it Damn Well the King Creole is 3 new place opened up by a woman named Elaine Avila who got sent Over Here As a Soldier a few Yean ago and who took a european out and who decided what the Heck to open up a restaurant that specialises in soul food african and Carrilean dishes and Creole cooking and thai features Brunch service on sundays. Avila s got an african woman and an american Man he is definitely Southern doing the cooking so she spends most of her time running around talking to the guests answering the phone and taking reservations for Days like Martin Luther King s birthday which most people will remember is now a Holiday. Decor Wise they avoided the urge to junk the place up with Kowanda statues and sets Otga Zelle horns and the result is a warm Homey kind of atmosphere sort of a Cross Between a California sprout restaurant and a German Gasthaus with jots of big wooden beams and Bright colors and modern paintings on the wails that you can buy after you finish eating if you got a spare $300 or soon you. I decided to lean More towards the by than the unti and ordered up a King Creole breakfast which can come with just about anything you want but which i got with three Fried eggs a bucket of grits pancakes sausage Bacon and Fried potatoes plus a Basket of last and Coffee and then a couple of Beers. This is major breakfasting. Of particular note were the pancakes which come with authentic Maple syrup out of Canada and the grits which i Haven t had in a Long while and which tasted As Good As Home. These by the Way were True grits and not your instant variety which Many restaurants nowadays Are trying to perpetrate on their customers. About the Only complaint 1 can Muster against this breakfast was the Bacon which was your european Type that tastes Only like a Salt lick. Still about a solid 9 on the International 1 to 10 scale. Jumbo was t Messing around with any Mere breakfast foods after All he d already eaten breakfast before we left and he went right after some of their african Rullof Rice with Chicken. Before that though he had a big bowl of their vegetable soup which is a lot More like a chowder or a Stew than a soup and which was just thick with kidney Beans and beef and Tomato and Chicken and carrots and Green Beans and a hefty dose of fire which brought the sweat out on jumbo s Cheeks. When Lumbo s Cheeks sweat we re talking very High Marks indeed. That african Rice. Jumbo said was sort of like a Jambalaya and the Chicken on the Side had b
