Stephens permitted one year waivers. Many teachers oppose the change which they say forces them to work harder without getting any More pay. And teacher unions Are fighting on their behalf. Most schools shortened class periods from 55 to 45 minutes to add an extra class to daily schedules this year although any scheduling method is allowed As Long As students can take seven courses. Many teachers complained they Don t have enough time to teach classes and that students arc falling behind. Some students cannot successfully handle the extra work they said. And teachers said they Don t have time to Grade papers or prepare for classes. Many principals also Are  or concerned about the change.
