European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 7, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday february 1986 the stars and stripes Page 25 outdoor adventures learning fhe ropes in the boy scouts the boy scouts of America May have helped me understand nature and the outdoors More than any other experience of my younger i look Back at those years it s easy to recognize that scouting was not just a routine pastime but also an education and significant part of life. In my troop in Missouri the scoutmaster established a Small distinction program called the order of the knife and Hatchet there were Only four or live scouts in our troop that belonged to the order. You had to demonstrate thorough knowledge and ability Tolive in a Field environment to become a member. Once selected you were Given a neckerchief in ceremony to Wear with the scout uniform. It was dark Maroon and had a knife embroidered on the Back. I could be worn Only with special neckerchief slides carved by the scout from several Yean of experience in our Small troop i was awarded the special neckerchief. I was extremely proud of it because it was something i had Long hoped few Yean later in 1957, i went to a National Jamboree at Valley forge with a provisional troop of scouts from throughout Missouri. On the Way to the Jamboree i got to know de Bass who was another scout in the provisional troop. Most of us called him Bass. We hit it off Well and became Good the last Day at Valley forge shortly before we broke Camp i told Bass All about the special order indy old Home troop and the embroidered neckerchief. There s hardly anything i treasure More from my scouting Days than this neckerchief and the Hickory slides. I want you to have them Bass i said. He offered some words of thanks and was obviously grateful. We were soon on our Way had been registered As a Lone scout for about a year before meeting Bass because my Home troop had become inactive. The Jamboree was great for me but it was essentially the final activity of my scouting Yean. I could look Back then at seven Good Yean which started off with a weekend camping trip to the Indian paintings a Bluff area on Salt River in Northeast Missouri. The Bluffs were so named be cause you could still see paintings on the High Rock Mark Swearengen Banks done by indians nearly 200 years ago. I was a Green Horn and did t know much t build a fire. Hardly knew one tree from another. Could t Row a boat or paddle a Canoe adjust barely knew How to swim. I remained that Way for months of camping tips. Igot sick a time or two and had to be taken to the doctor. Then i really started to learn about the out doors and scouting from friends especially some of the older scouts. There were Bacon and eggs an Many other meals cooked in the open and Happy times around a eventually became a Good swimmer and then came the Merit badges for pioneering rowing canoeing lifesaving and soil and water conservation. I earned those and Many others. I even got some marksmanship experience at one of the scout Camps. There were More camping trips with Cool nightstand whippoorwill which brought the natural Beauty of our country into Harmony with these years of adventure were the values and blessings of friends. We had a boy in our troop at the Jamboree who had cerebral palsy. He could t always do things As fast As the others but hews one of the scouts. He needed us and we definitely needed was some sort of magic about the whole experience that taught us what scouting was a labout. I recognized this on that last Day at Valley forge and i remember it today. I would t Trade those Days for now whenever i recall giving the neckerchief to Bass i remember that moment As an expression of personal Friendship and appreciation for what scout ing gave me.
