The report released thursday indicates the race for the designation As the nation s largest defense contractor will be a tight one. A preliminary tally for fiscal i98s, which ended sept. 30. Shows Mcdonnell Douglas corp. Slightly ahead of general dynamics corp. The annual report the defense department s state data abstract Atlas contains no narrative to explain trends. But it does have tables showing the breakdown of payroll and major contract spending across the so states. As it has for years California continued to gain the most from Pentagon spending thanks to dozens of Mili tary facilities and such Large contractors As Northrop corp., Litton industries inc. And Lockheed corp. According to the Atlas s4i billion was spent there in i98s is 1.9 billion for military civilian Reserve and retired payrolls and s29.1 billion in prime contract awards. That was Only a slight increase Over the $40 billion spent in the state the previous year. Texas followed with $16.5 billion $5.9 billion for payrolls and $10.6 billion in prime contract awards up substantially from the si4.3 billion a year earlier. Virginia followed in third place in 1985 with $13.9 billion contrasting with a 1984 total of $12 billion. The Pentagon s spending in Virginia was split More evenly Between payroll and contracts with the former totalling $7.7 billion and the latter $6.2 billion. Hal said he and his wife plan to study dentistry in College together and open their own office someday. He said he and his wife hoped his experience would be a lesson for other people his age. California Texas new York Massachusetts and Missouri led the states in the contract awards distributed to companies operating within their Borders. The next Day with another Crew the aircraft resumed its Normal flights carrying passengers from Dallas to san Antonio Back to Dallas and on to Denver according to Faa officials. In Denver minor damage to the outside skin of the aircraft was noticed by the cockpit Crew officials said. No one was injured in the incident although officials said the Impact with the break away Airport lights was severe enough to cause the oxygen masks in the Cabin to dislodge anti several ceiling tiles to break away. American airlines spokesman John Hotard said the company would have no  completion of its investigation into the incident except to confirm the Faa s action. Federal regulations require that flight Crews make a walk around inspection of an aircraft before it departs on a flight.
