Dolly Cou Ondris with recently discovered 4500 year of Marble statue. Athens museum houses Cyc Ladic Art Byker Inhofe associated press a 4,500-year-old Marble statue of a Fertility figure that looks like modern abstract sculpture recently unearthed on a greek Island is part of the world s first museum of Cyc Ladic Art which opened this year in Athens Greece. The 4vi-foot statue was probably worshipped in a shrine on one of the Cyclades islands in the Central Aegean sea where hundreds of smaller figurines in the same style have been found. The female figure carved in Semi abstract style is the Centrepiece of a collection of ancient greek Art acquired in the past 25 years by a greek shipowner the late Nikos p. his wife Dolly. More than 200 Cyc Ladic artefacts including about 50 figurines from the Goulandris collection Are in the new museum. The figurines which mostly portray pregnant women first appeared on european Art markets a Century ago. Critics dismissed them As but their Plain elegant contours were admired by Picasso and now fascinate collectors. At auction a Small Cyc Ladic piece May bring $45,000. They bring prehistory Back to life but their modern lines remind you of sculptors like Modigliani or Henry Moore said Dolly Goulandris. The figurines were made in the Early Bronze age 3,200-2,200 by Small Island communities that grew prosperous trading locally mined Copper ands Irver. Archaeologists have found Only a few Graves containing the figurines but Tomb robbers have plundered dozens of prehistoric cemeteries Selling looted artefacts to dealers in Greece and abroad. Dolly Goulandris said she bought the statue last year. But she declined to say who had sold k to her. It s not certain Why the figurines were made but it s usually assumed they were connected with Fertility. Ancient repairs on some of them suggest they were in daily use perhaps in household shrines and were later buried with their owners said Colin Renfrew professor of archaeology at Cambridge University. The Goulandris collection has been displayed in recent years in Washington , Houston Tokyo London and Paris. The figurines Drew crowds everywhere. But my husband and i started the collection to repatriate some important pieces of ancient greek Art so the new museum is their permanent Home Dolly Goulandris said. 12 stripes Magazine february 30,1966
