We have encountered some difficulties with the Dodds administration concerning the tournament Burchfield said sunday night. However we have had Calls from some people in Spain Italy and other countries indicating they were coming to Naples. We Haven t heard officially from Many Germany people As yet but others have told me that they know of wrestlers up there who plan on being in Naples for the tournament. I really Hope beget a big a couple in Italy sent me copies of the letter or. Jerald Bloom Dodds Mediterranean director sent to l. Col. Daniel r. Burchfield Karena s husband and president of the Naples boosters club concerning the tournament. One of them wrote i wanted to make sure you had a copy of the enclosed letter 1 am sure the message of he letter docs not Surprise you one Damn it did t. Dodds Long has been in Accord with parents Tak ing their youngsters out of school and accompanying hem on educational Tours. The key words of course Are accompanying Bloom emphasizes them in his letter saying that students who Are unable to travel with their parents to Naples and who Are absent will be in an unix Cusco status. Bloom added that parents unable to travel would be put under a greater Burden of having to lie about the True reason for the student s absence. Bloom pointed out the impossibility of Naples Stu dents being on an educational trip and also being involved with a local activity. In his last paragraph Bloom said that principals from Dodds med schools would be informed that under no condition will students be excused from school attendance for any postseason tournament in any Bloom specifically said any sport. if it is All right for the band or orchestra Dodds sanctioned concerts at faraway places with out parents accompanying Don t get me wrong my daughter benefited greatly from appearances at non Dodds Sanction cd Ger Man Fasching programs and other musical events away from the school when she was first chair first clarinet at Frankfurt High school even though she was unaccompanied most of the time. But Back to the Naples wrestling tournament. Ben Abrams All participants should arrange their schedules so that they arrive on thursday Burchfield said. She added that the wrestlers would be billeted in the naval support activities gymnasium thursday night. However she pointed out that Naples boosters club officials Ana parents of the Wildcat wrestlers have acquired other accommodations after thursday for 90 competitors already and that they can get More if necessary. She would like All wrestlers who arc coming or coaches who Are sending competitors to the meet to Call her at Naples civilian 081-509-2182 As soon As possible to confirm their intentions. I had a letter from former Dodds sports coordinator Bill Houston regarding the Jan. 30 prep pick in s column. Bill pointed out that in the 1970s his son Randy did not play in the non Dodds sanctioned meet at Bonn he competed in Tennis tournaments at Garmisch that were not Dodds tournaments but open to All Comers. My argument with Dodds was his right and All other students rights to participate in any activity that could help their careers Houston wrote. Randy participated in the Garmisch open Tennis tournament which was open to All players civilian and military. As time has proven it was advantageous for him to participate in such tournaments. As you know he went to College on a Tennis scholarship and since that time has become a Tennis profession Al Back to the Dodds a Issue. I feel now As then. Dodds should determine its sports seasons. After that no Dodds transportation or staff should be utilized for these so called Community sponsored tournaments. This would not however preclude any parents or Community from sending note the termino logy sending not accompanying their child to participate in these events Houston went on to Laud the Good sports fans in Naples for helping the wrestling program but said he had some qualms Over the site As a Good location for such an event because i think Many parents will be pressured into sending their children at great expense All the Way to Naples when this Money could be better used say towards their College i think Bill has very Good Points especially regard ing funding. If going to such events would create undue expense and stress perhaps the athletes would be belter off not making such journeys. However if boosters clubs or other organizations can and arc willing to be of assistance then there obviously us Bill has stated is Merit in such participation. And certainly those inclined should not be denied their individual rights. Who knows this tournament might enable a Dodds performer to achieve goal in wrestling such As Randy Houston reached in Tennis.
