Why because according to the Pimpernel we Are a nation of sportsmen and just now it is the fashion to Pluck the Fox from Between the Teeth of the  the play now running at her majesty s theater London is based on the famous and much loved edwardian children s novel of Jentri Queano derring do. The piece Calls for All out spectacle and the massive and dramatic set designed by Mark Thompson certainly delivers the goods. The problem and it s really an annoyance More than anything else with this production is that the play depends on melodrama and heroics for a great Deal of its momentum and with Sinden being swashbuckling one second and winking at the audience the next the viewer does t know whether the Scarlet Pimpernel a Camp comedy or a thriller with some very funny moments thrown in. Sinden makes his Entrance disguised As an old Crone conning her Way out of Paris at the time of the revolution. The pipe smoking Crone has an aristocrat she has saved from the Tumbri posing As a plague victim lying atop her fetid cart. The Crone pulls it of but just and the committee of Public safety s envoy the funereal Chaumelin wickedly played by Charles Kay sets off to Dover and then London in Pursuit of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Will sir Percy be Able to continue his double life without being detected by Chaumelin who is blackmailing sir Percy s French actress wife into telling All will the Scarlett Pimpernel and his men be Able to continue snatching intended victims from the Guillotine that you la have to find out for yourself but i will Tell you that there Are some wonderfully funny lines and scenes As the play unfolds. Chaumelin s incompetent assistant threatening some of the Pimpernel s men with one false move and you la never taste Cucumber sandwiches again tips one off to. The kind of English humor this play abounds in in keeping with the new adaptation s tone is Sinden s greeting to the malevolent one eyed Hunch backed innkeeper a Good citizen Brogard. You look As Bonny As Ever. Rung any Good Bells lately the spitting on spoons Brogard he wants to be rid of us Deadpan lady Blakeney is hilariously disgusting As he does a number with a chef s knife worthy of Paul Bouse while dicing a rat s entrails for a Stew for his unwanted guests. However the humor of a scene where the Pimpernel s nuns liberate prisoners at the place of execution and then play Rugby with priory severed Heads May strike some theater goers As a bit much. All in All the Scarlet Pimpernel a finely costumed splendidly acted show. Its weakness lies in that director Nicholas Hytner apparently could not decide whether to go for its inherent heroics or for the buffoonery that having Sinden in the cast Grants. He opted for both when playing the whole thing for laughs appears to have presented a better Choice.
