European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 7, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 stars and stripes Friday March 7, 1986 less lumps Tor Earl s umps by Milton Richman up senior editor sports Miami maybe it s because he feels so Good about his Baltimore orioles or because he feels bygones should be bygones but Earl Weaver hereby forgives All the umpires for their past mistakes. He d he it on the record though he still thinks that umpires mistakes Cost managers their jobs. Now Don t go jumping to any wrong ideas about this full Pardon Weaver is so graciously granting umps. He in t really doing it to be a smart Alec or to antagonize them anymore than he has. He simply wants everybody to know he has nothing personal against the umpires. When a season starts i Don t anticipate any problems with umpires says Baltimore s Brassy Little manager who has been kicked out of 93 games since he took Over the orioles in 1968. It s very Seldom i go a year without problems though Weaver admits. I look at it this Way if i make mistakes and it costs me a Ball game i blame myself. I even holler at myself. If a ballplayer makes a mistake i m the one who got him in there so it s my mistake too. But an Umpire s mistake is not my fault so Why should i be penalized for it As Weaver Speaks a biting wind whips through the orioles Miami stadium training site and chases a Covey of sea gulls out of Center Field. Standing a few feet off the foul line Weaver watches his Baltimore players fight the wind trying to get in shape and continues discussing the umpires. God forgives them their mistakes and i forgive them their mistakes he says. At the time the mistakes Hap pen you try to get them rectified. You realize All the mistakes you make on your own and you Don t want to see the umpires add to them. Too Many mistakes Cost manag ers their jobs. So what it comes Down to is that the umpires Cost managers their the umpires Tell you different. They believe managers lose their jobs because of their own mistakes or More Likely because of poor player performance. No matter what Earl Weaver who has guided the orioles to six division titles four american league pen Nants and one world series title and most certainly will be a Hall of Fame candidate when he s through has to be the uncontested freestyle Champion for getting booted out of games. That goes for managers or players. Before Bob Brown the orioles energetic award win Ning Public relations director began keeping count the Way he does nobody bothered taking notice of the number of times managers or players were thrown out by umpires. The Only two managers i can think of who might be come close to Weaver s total were Leo Durocher and Frankie Frisch. Frisch is gone so there s no Way of checking with him but from his Home in Palm Springs calif., Leo the lip tried to calculate How Many times he was tossed out. He could t. I never kept track of pm he said. Sometimes i was kicked out before the game even began. I d see the Umpire who chased me the Day before and i d say it still goes what i said yesterday then he d Point at me and say goodbye " Weaver knows that feeling. He also has been ejected from games before they began drawing the thumb in the opener of a double header and again the same Day coming out to deliver his lineup card before the Nightcap. Last year was t what you d consider a Good one for him. He was thrown out four times but you have to Bear in mind Joe Altobelli started the season As the orioles manager and Weaver did t come out of his two year plus retirement to replace him until june 14. Under Weaver the orioles won 53 games and lost 52 in finishing fourth. That was As Low As the club Ever wound up under Weaver and the orioles did that Only once before during his stewardship. This year it la be another Story he promises. I think i be got As Good a bal club As anybody in the american league East he says. Last year is All Over with. Losing makes you mad enough to want to come Back and do everything right. I m Here to win that s the old familiar Earl Weaver All the Umpire should recognize. Sounds to me As if they ought to get ready. Forgiveness or not. Up photo Earl Weaver knows How to kick up a storm with umpires. I forgive them their mistakes muscular Bruno Numero Uno in Britain s boxing eyes by Larry Siddons Wembley England a Frank Bruno s body could have been chiselled from Coffee coloured Marble full of muscle with a Waist almost As thin As his biceps Are thick. I m the strongest heavyweight in the world he said. Whether he also is the Best is just one More question in the increasingly muddled world of boxing s top division. It was a question few had asked until tuesday night when the 24-year-old euro Pean Champion from Britain sent a right hand thundering into the left Side of Gerrie Coetzee s face. Coetzee once the world Champ went Down and probably out of boxing. Bruno went to the top of the list of con tenders for the world boxing association title held by Tim Witherspoon. Bruno appeared to be heading in that direction two years ago. He was undefeated and on May 13, 1984, was leading Ameri can James Bon Crusher Smith on All three judges cards As they entered the final round of a 10-round bout at Wembley Arena. But Smith scored a last minute knockout to set up an unsuccessful shot at the heavy weight Crown then held by Larry Holmes. Bruno went Back to fighting lower ranked opponents and hearing the doubters say he was out of his class. Now i can say that defeat was t so bad Bruno said after knocking out Coet Zee. It taught me a since then have come victories Over Ken Lakusta Jeff Jordan Phil Brown Lucien Rodriguez and Anders Eklund for the european championship. He stopped Larry Frazier in two rounds late last year to set up the Coetzee fight and now May have a Chance to become Britain s first world heavyweight Champ since Bob Fitzsimmons in1897. Terry Lawless Bruno s Trainer said his fighter has become a Man since the Smith fight. I believe heavyweights mature in their mid-20s, a Little later than some of the lower weight boxers Lawless said. He has also the Trainer said gone through strenuous training. No weight training just a lot of boxing training Lawless said. Strength is a god Given thing Bruno said and you cannot put it on the regimen has helped Mold a body that Lawless said has very Little fat on it even though Bruno does not follow special diets favored by other athletes such As ten Nis stars Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova. He s like a jockey he s right to the Bone Lawless said. The things that he likes to eat Are the things that Are Good for him. He s not big on sweets or a biscuit eater. He loves pasta he loves salads. And he loves to work. He runs he climbs All of this has allowed Bruno to develop the kind of punch that Coetzee can Only remember a right hand Jab so fast and hard that Coetzee was sent partially out of the ring at 1 minute 50 seconds of the first round. The next Day said he was retiring from boxing. I have been boxing for 20 years and nobody has Ever done to me what Frank did. Coetzee said. The punch was so hard i did not even know about Lawless said he was surprised at the Speed of the fight. I was t surprised at the punch that did it the manager feels that Bruno ranks among the hardest punching heavyweights. \ the Best i be seen were George fore a Man and Ernie shavers he said. Frank is getting up British promoters Are hopeful of staging a Bruno Witherspoon title bout in mid june at Wembley stadium where 100,000 fans regularly watch soccer matches. With Tele vision rights expected to go for More than $1.5 million the promoters feel they can outbid . Rivals for the bout with a purse of about $2.5 million. Safe women out Chanute fab 111.
