A top ranked Duke led by Mark Alarie and Johnny Dawkins won its first Atlan tic coast conference basketball tournament in six years sunday with a 68-67 Victory Over sixth ranked Georgia tech. Dawkins who scored 20 Points clinched the Victory for the Blue devils when he converted two free throws with seven seconds left. A Basket by Alarie at the 44-second Mark had Given Duke a 66-65 Edge in a see saw finish to the 33rd annual tournament. Alarie scored 17 Points for the Blue devils who last won the league title in 1980 by beating Maryland. Duke 32-2, led 37-34 at halftime. The Blue devils scored six Quick Points at the outset of the second half four by Dawkins and two by Alarie. That gave Duke its biggest Lead at 43-34 with 16 46 left. But Georgia tech 25-6, staged a rally of its own to set up the close finish. Starting with a 15-3 run Georgia tech erased the Defi Cit and took a 49-46 Lead on John Salley s Baseline jumper with 10 23 left. Duke came Back with six straight Points and regained the advantage 52-49. The Blue devils twice held leads of three Points the last at 62-59 on a pair of free throws by Tommy Amaker with 3 45 left. Baskets by Mark Price College basketball and Duane Ferrell gave Georgia tech a 63-62 Lead at Dawkins tossed in a double pump jumper in the Lane with 1 35 left to give Duke a 64-63 Lead but Craig Neal drove past Amaker for a Layup and a 65-64 Lead with 1 02remaining. Alarie s Baseline jumper and Dawkins free throws sealed the contest while Price finished the scoring on a jumper with one second left. Dominique Wilkins hit two free throws for Atlanta but Pressey tied the game with an off balance shot from three feet behind the three Point line. Wilkins finished with 29 Points. A Keith Hernandez of the new York mets saturday accepted commissioner Peter Ueberroth s punishment for cocaine involvement in order to play this year but insisted he never dealt in drugs and was being excessively penalized. Hernandez earlier said he would fight a one year sus pension imposed by Ueberroth. He was the last of the seven players who were most heavily penalized to accept the conditions set by Ueberroth for holding the suspensions in abeyance. Joaquin Andujar of Oakland Dave Parker of Cincinnati Jeff Leonard of san Francisco Lonnie Smith of Kansas City Enos Cabell of los Angeles and Dale Berra of the new York Yankees Are the other six players. They already had agreed to contribute 10 percent of their 1986 salaries to drug rehabilitation programs to devote 100 hours in each of the next two years to drug related Community service and to accept random drug testing for the rest of their baseball careers to avoid the one year suspensions. Those four were suspended for 60 Days but were told they could play this year if they donated 5 percent of their 1986 salaries to drug facilities performed 50 hours of Community service for one year and submitted to random testing. Lacy and Holland accepted while Washington and Sorensen have not said what they will do. All 11 who were suspended testified or were mentioned in testimony last year at Federal trials in Pittsburgh of men accused of trafficking in drugs among ballplayers. On saturday Marvin Miller former executive director of the players association said the players Are undermining what they have accomplished in recent years by acting As individuals rather than in concert As Union members. Apparently we Don t have players with guts enough to defend themselves Miller said. Hernandez recalled that he had said a week ago that he would be reviewing the commissioner s decision with my advisers and the players association in order to get a better understanding of what my obligations would  i have now completed that review he said in the statement read in mets general manager Frank Cashen s office. I feel strongly that i have an obligation to my team the fans and to baseball to play this
