Finn step7 latest thing in ski racing by Klint Johnson assistant sports editor Garmisch Germany skating or the finn step As Many people Call it is a technique that has revolutionized Cross country ski racing for the past two or three years. Pushing outward with one or both skis gives the racer far More Speed. The finn step is also known As the Ritonen tech Nique for Juri Ritonen who popularized the Man Euver. The finn step has been banned in Start finish sections of some world class races because it is dangerous the protruding skis making crashes More Likely. Skat ing also destroys a track. But there was no Rule against skating in the Usa eur and Safe nordic championships Here this season. Most of the better racers were doing it. And liking it. The technique Calls for revolutionary changes in equipment. The skis Are Shorter and the poles longer 10-15cm said Usa eur Champion Randy Sapp of Nuernberg. And the waxing is on a fast track such As for the usar eur sprint Sapp said he used no Wax at All. Waxing for skating is More like for Al Pine skiing said Tim Fisk of Hanau who is the defending Usa eur Alpine combined Champion. You Wax for As fast a Glide As Fisk is a testimony to what the technique can do for one s Speed. He skied Only diag onal in last year s nordic races and did not place in the top 15. This year he has a third. I worked out on roller skis during the summer to train for skating he said. It s obviously faster and you have to do it to stay with the Best racers. Physically Fisk says that skating puts More Strain on the upper body. Sapp who said he skated some at col lege races when he was at St. Lawrence u., says the Only time he does t use the new technique now is when going downhill. Skating Uphill is better because with the Shorter skis it s easier to herring Bone he said. We used to skate on the Corners Only when racing in High school and College St. Lawrence said Usa eur women s Champion Andrea Frenette of Nuernberg. But i really did t get into it until i got Over Here this Brian Gordan of Ben Waters one of the few Safe skaters Here this weekend said because of the pushing off motion skating helps to carry you through the turns. But if the track is fast As it was Here this weekend i like stay in the Inge Woerndle longtime arc tournament director who is retired but keeps an Active interest in ski racing said the finn step has made it difficult for nordic race organizers. There Are now skating races and non skating races said Woerndle. And of course the big races Are All for skaters which Means there is no one or two track course Only a wide Flat the technique started in Finland where skiers on the Frozen lakes used one ski to push off and the other to Glide said Woerndle. Then it caught on with the Rac the Kaltenbrunne Cross country area near Here like Many in Europe has separate recreational ski tracks for skating and non skating. Heilbronn Falls 99-97 to wolves by Dave Walczak staff writer Wuerzburg Germany you can t believe everything you hear in vi1 corps men s basketball especially after Wurz Burg s 99-97 Squeaker Over Heilbronn Sun Day. First the wolves said they took Heil Bronn for granted then played with their chests and tongues out to overcome a 46-40 halftime deficit. Then there was Myron Bell who insisted he was nervous. The 6-foot-4 Forward swished two free throws with 12 seconds left to break a 97-97 tie. The free throws snapped one deadlock Only to create another. The two Point ver dict left both teams with 7-3 Marks atop Vii corps Northern division standings. Reserve guard Erwin Christy s jumper with 21 seconds left set the stage for Bell. The 10-footer tied the game at 97, marking the fourth time the game was tied in the last half. Eugene Largent brought the Ball the court and whipped a pass to Bell in the key. Christy charged in whacking Bell on the hand. I was open underneath said Bell. But give Largent some credit. That was a hell of an Bell who describes himself As a 70 per cent free throw shooter needed no assist Ance at the line. I did t want to think. But you could say i was still it was no time to relax. Heilbronn unbounded the Ball to John Rousey and the 6 foot guard from Philadelphia spun past a de fender at Hal court. Off balance he threw a jumper from the top of the key with two seconds left but the shot banged off the Back of the rim and Wuerzburg held on. It was t a set play or anything said Rousey who finished with a game High 27 Points. I just wanted to get the Ball to our big Guys underneath or get off a Quick shot so they could get a rebound. It just did t go Rousey s hot hand spurred the visitors in the first half. He scored 10 straight Points in one stretch to fuel a 16-7 spurt Early in the game. But he also picked four fouls in the first 15 minutes. We changed things in the second half to go Down Low said winning coach Van Boyd. We knew they had a Bunch of Guys in foul trouble and we wanted to take advantage of the strategy worked As Craig West Pat Rick Elmore and Isadore Stuart All fouled out forcing eagles coach Terry Taylor to go to his Bench. With Rousey on the Bench to open the second half the rattlers went on a 19-9 tear in the first 7 minutes. Arenza Johnson sparked the surge scoring eight Points in that Span. Rousey came Back into action at that Point and the eagles chipped away and retook the Lead at 87-86 on Stuart s follow shot with 3 45 left. Four Lead changes and three ties later Bell went to the line. Stuart scored 16 Points before fouling out. Christy had 14. Largent topped Wuerzburg with 25 Points. Johnson scored 18, Bell 13 and Ron Ald Gurley 12. They kept coming Back and coming Back said Taylor. They re the Type of team that takes advantage of you when you try to take a Rousey echoed his coach s assessment. You can t shake them . You relax on defense and they take advantage. But i like playing teams like Wuerzburg. I gave 100 percent out we went Down to Heilbronn earlier with Only six Guys and no coach and Only lost by two Points said Boyd so there was a lot of talk that we were going to walk All Over Heilbronn. But they proved they re a Good team
