The defense department issued the Security warning against the major defense contractor after concluding the company was not taking adequate care to ensure Security at its san Diego plants. Last year s Winner Libby riddles who was the first woman to win the id Tarod is Garnie s partner and did t compete this year because they take turns running the Marathon race. In subzero temperatures under skies streaked by North Ern lights Butcher finally pulled away from Garnie out Side Nome ending their leapfrog Battle up the Norton sound coast. The previous record for the 1,158-mile race 12 Days eight hours 45 minutes and two seconds was set in 1981 by four time id Tarod Champion Rick Swenson. Swenson was third into Nome on thursday arriving at 8 59 . In fourth was Joe Runyan of Nenana at 11 11 ., followed 16 minutes later by Duane Halverson of trapper Creek. John Cooper of Ambler took sixth place shortly after noon and even his elapsed time of 12 Days 3 hours 28 minutes and 3 seconds beat Swenson s 1981record. Butcher scarcely had a Chance to savor her $50,000 Victory before facing the inevitable comparisons of her feat and last year s by riddles. Butcher 30, had been the Odds on favorite to be the first woman id Tarod Champion. She had finished second in two previous Idit rods but was forced to drop out of the race last year when a Moose stomped through her team. Questions about her perennial also ran status rankled the normally ebullient Butcher after her win thursday. Nobody made anything of it until Libby won she said. Then they got it in their minds i could t do it. But i never had any doubts.
