This is the first sign of opposition from senator Goldwater that i have seen or heard said sen. Phil Gramm a Texas a member of the committee. I have never heard him oppose Home porting  Goldwater was out of town and his staff said he was unavailable to elaborate on the letter dated March 7 and sent to Secretary of defense Caspar w. The Issue of Home porting for Navy ships is soon to come up before the Senate and quite frankly i m opposed to it Goldwater wrote. Goldwater s opposition would be a Crit ical blow against Home porting which the Navy says is necessary for strategic Rea sons even though it May be More costly than modifying existing facilities.
