European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 26, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 16 the stars and stripes wednesday March 26,1986 Charlie Watts left Ron Wood Keith Richards and Mick Jagger Bill Wyman is missing have a new album dirty work featuring High Energy Rock n soul. A photo by Robert Palmer new York times Mick Jagger and Keith Richards collaborators for More than 20 years a songwriters and record producers for the rolling stones Don t seem to be on the same Wavelength at the moment. The fact of the matter is Keith and i Aren t getting on too Well Jagger said in a recent Telephone conversation. With the first rolling stones album for Columbia released in America last monday Richards has been telling the press he wants the band to tour this year and thinks or Hopes that it will. I d love to be out there playing and of course the Money would be great Jagger admitted. But there s no Point unless it s going to be fun and right now things Are just too difficult. We Are not going to tour this tension Between the two musicians who referred to themselves for a time As the Glimmer twins is nothing new nor is it surprising. But this is the first time any of the rolling stones have chosen to air their differences in such Plain language and in Public. Business Wise a tour would seem to be the sensible thing to do. Dirty work is the stones first album for Columbia since the band signed a multimillion Dollar contract with the company last year. The first fruits of that contract last year s Mick Jagger Solo album she s the Boss was a Success but hardly a blockbuster. And nothing Sells records like a heavily publicized tour which any rolling stones Outing would be by definition. Dagger s Solo album and the hit single he recorded with David Bowie a revival of the motown Chestnut dancing in the streets Are High on the list of probable Bones of Contention Between the stones Lead vocalist and Lead guitarist. Richards and the band s other guitarist Ron Wood worked together for months to come up with guitar parts riffs and Melody lines for songs on the forthcoming rolling stones album. Jagger was wrapping up his Solo album during this period. And when sessions for dirty work officially got under Way with the arrival of bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts Jagger was still working on videos and other promotions for his album. Mick s timing could have been better Richards said during a series of conversations. But he was Quick to add once Mick got fully involved he came up with some great music and ideas that really improved the stuff we had been working Jagger has always been Chameleon like by nature and his work outside the stones is the work of a restless Man who wants to appear Forward looking up on the latest musical trends. The last thing he wants is to hear people accuse him of being outmoded. Perhaps by airing his differences with Richards he is inviting speculation about his own viability and possible future As a Solo artist. People do change Over the course of 20 years Jagger said. But Richards remains an unreconstructed Rock n roller. For dirty work the band brought in an outside producer Steve Lilly White for the first time since the mid-170s. He seems to have tightened some of the arrangements and clarified textures. Nevertheless dirty work is the most traditional sounding rolling stones album in years and that is almost certainly the result of Richards s very definite vision of what a rolling stones album should sound like and what the band does Best. On their new album and on the posters advertising it that were plastered around town the rolling stones Are As Remote from today s typical pop sound and pop look As they were 20 years ago and As unconcerned about it. The album is the sort of disk the band s fans have Long expected but often Haven t gotten Over the past decade or so. Dirty work is pure High Energy Rock n soul compulsively danceable except for its concluding Ballad. Lean snarling supercharged electric guitars and a Crisp snapping Backbeat Are the order of the Day. The Black and White poster the dirty work begins on March 24th," the Day the album was in the stores is stones image making As we have come to know it in the course of the band s history. Jagger has his shirt off flaunting his rib Cage and Richards glares ominously like a film Vampire All Toothy and sinister. The three other members simply look like themselves and look their age. Those gaunt and crumbling visages Are about As far removed from the approved pop look of the moment As seen endlessly on mtg As one could imagine. Dirty work does t sound like the music that dominates mtg and contemporary hit radio either. Jagger commented during the most recent rolling stones tour if this band was starting out today looking for a recording contract no major Label would sign he was right. Most of today s pop hits Sung by an interchangeable Parade of singers with windblown Haystack haircuts and teen idol Good looks have Glassy surfaces and machine made rhythms with no rough edges and no bite. The rolling stones sound jagged and Loose. Their music retains an Edge and bite that one expects to find in Punk or underground clubs played by bands that record for poorly distributed Independent record labels. These bands Don t get a hearing on most radio stations and Little if any time on mtg. But one will be hearing and seeing the rolling stones still thumbing their noses at the Public after All these years. Dirty work will be available in european record stores sometime this week according to a lbs spokesperson
