European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 26, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 stars and stripes wednesday March 26, 1986 coach k has a style All his own by Dave Anderson East Rutherford . Not in repose he has the face of a polish Parish priest. Neatly Cut Black hair. Small features. Soft smile. Gentle sense of humor. And even As the Duke basketball coach he is usually in repose As if he had just taken off his vestments. Mike Krzyzewski is known As coach k at Duke and he will be known As that Here to Avert an inevitable misspelling. When the final four Convene in Dallas saturday he will be the least known coach Larry Brown of Kansas Denny Crum of Louisville Dale Brown of Louisiana state and Mike How does he pronounce it he pronounces it she Shev ski with the or silent. But it s suggested that you learn How to pronounce coach k s name because he has Only begun to coach. When his Duke team emerged from the East regional sunday with a 71-50 Victory that dry docked Navy and David Robinson the Blue devils record was 36-2, not to mention their 20-game winning Streak. With a Victory Over Kansas in saturday s semifinal of the Mcaa tournament this Duke team will surpass the record of 36 triumphs in a season that has endured since the 1948 Kentucky team with Alex Groza and Ralph Beard won the championship. Duke is top seeded in the Mcaa tournament. Even before the tournament began Duke was the nation s top ranked team in the news Agency polls. But Duke s image is silent. That s because we Don t have a Patrick Ewing or a Ralph Sampson or Bill Walton we just have a Bunch of Good players Jay Bilas their 6-foot-8 Center was saying now. But 10 years Down the Road maybe Well get credit As a team that had tremendous teamwork. If the word team does t describe this team there s no such word. But you Don t accomplish what this team has by just throwing the balls out on the court at practice. Coach k works As hard at coaching As we do at now 39, coach k Learned much of his basketball at army As the coach there for five seasons until 1980 and before that As the cadets guard and Captain and later As an assistant coach when Bobby Knight was the army coach. He s a Cross Between Jim Valvano and Bobby Knight he s in Between said Mark Alarie the 6-8 Forward. He s a disciplinarian in a Loose environment. He coaches file photo Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. With 6-foot-8 Center Jay Bilas in a very Friendly atmosphere but he has the ability to get the most out of his players. He creates a great atmosphere for hard working players. You Don t feel any pressure playing for him. He s Calm most of the time but hell yell. He has his moments. But mostly he d rather talk to you individually in order to get a Point across. He s always very orderly and organized. He s like the boy scout motto be prepared no one questions his system. It s been Over his 11 seasons coach k has a 194-126 record 73-59 at army and now 121-67 at Duke despite 10-17 and 11-17 records his second and third seasons there. My freshman year we had that 11-17 record recalls Johnny Dawkins the All America guard. But Early in the next season coach k instilled Confidence in us and we be been going Ever since. He let a player be himself shoot from outside penetrate go for the steal. When a coach has that much Confidence in you then you respond better. People think he must be a clone of Bobby Knight but he s much different. One time instead of practising we played volleyball. Another time we played soft but despite that relaxed atmosphere David Henderson the 6-5 guard mentioned coach k s military intensity. He s very intense Henderson was saying and be cause of that we re intense especially on Tommy Amaker who with Dawkins forms College basketball s Best backcourt this season mentioned thorough Ness. Coach k always knows what the other team likes to do Amaker said. And from that we know what we have to go after like against Navy he wanted us to keep the pressure on the perimeter. Don t let them get the easy pass to Robinson that was the key to the Robinson scored 23 Points but of the other middies Only Kylor Whitaker had As Many As 10 Points All but 2 in the second half. By then Duke had taken charge with an 18-2 spurt for a 34-22 halftime Lead. We knew we had to keep our Eye on David Robinson said Alarie but we did t want any of their other players to have a big game. As the game developed our offensive rebounding not Only produced Points for us but it changed the mood of the game. We Felt much More Duke simply had too much manpower for Navy especially when the middies shot so tentatively Early. Navy had an Early 20-16 Lead but scored Only one Basket the rest of the first half. But i want to congratulate Navy on an unbelievable season winning 30 games coach k said later. I coached at army when we won Only nine games one sea son i know How hard it is at a service Academy. I Don t care if Navy had David Robinson or some Admiral playing for them that s a he Kuva pair of Browns a Cardinal a Rookie final four coaches respond to the colors by Jim o Connell a sports writer As far As the coaches Are concerned there Are three Basic colors involved in the 1986 version of the final four. The first is Brown As in coach Larry Brown of Kansas and coach Dale Brown of Louisiana state. The second is red As in the color of Louisville which is making its sixth appear Ance in the National semifinals under coach Denny Crum. And the third is Green As in new which is what Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is to the pageantry and clamor of the final four. The others have All been there before. Both Browns Are making their second appearance in what has become College basketball s showcase event. I Don t have any idea if that will be an advantage Krzyzewski said of his Rookie status when the teams Convene in Dallas this week. That s something i Don t pay attention there will be a lot of attention paid to Krzyzewski and his top ranked Blue devils however As they arrive in Dallas with an Mcaa record tying 36 victories against two losses Riding a 20-game winning Streak and with some titles already earned. The Way we figure it we be won five championships this year Krzyzewski in his sixth year at the Atlantic coast Confer ence school said. We be won the big Apple nit the regular season acc the acc tournament and each of these last two weekends we be won a Crum is the Only one of the four coaches remaining in the tournament to have won the championship. His 1980 team led by guard Darrell Griffith beat Urcla coached by Larry Brown 59-54. We be had to work very hard to get to this Point Crum said after his cardinals beat Auburn for the West regional title. We played a Tough schedule but now it s paid off for us. It s the same feeling each time you make it added Crum who took Louisville to the final four in 1972, his first year at Louisville and his first As a head coach. It s very rewarding. It makes you feel like you be done a Good obviously each of the teams and coaches. Did More than a Good Job to win four games in the Mcaa tournament. But there is much More in store this weekend. They can celebrate for about 30 seconds Larry Brown said of his second ranked Jay Hawks. We can t be satisfied with just getting to the final four. It s Spe Cial to be there but we be got to do every thing we can to win our kids know not to get too excited yet Crum answered when asked Why the cardinals locker room was so subdued. They know they be got two More games to Louisiana state had t registered two Mcaa victories since its final four appearance in 1981, losing in the first round the last two years after missing the tournament for two years. I thought i did my Best Job of coaching and they gave their Best on the floor Dale Brown said after his tigers beat Southeast Ern conference rival Kentucky for the Southeast regional title. I guess it s the highest moment i be Ever this week is one they will always cherish. It will be that Way for an old hand like Crum who has had Only one player stay with him for four years and not appear in a final four and for. A Rookie like Krzyzewski whose previous Best postseason venture was to the quarterfinals of the nit. Win or lose it s a thrill for each of them whether they downplay it or not. After being in the acc and the nit i Don t expect anything More Krzyzewski said. I just Hope we re healthy and hungry and will give it our Best shot like we have done All year dozen schools in hot Pursuit of Navy Mentor Baltimore a Paul Evans who brought Navy out of the basketball doldrums and into the National spotlight May have coached his last game for the service Academy. After the middies lost to top ranked Duke 71-50 in the Mcaa s East regional finals on sunday the 41-year-old coach admitted that he would soon attend to the various Job offers he has on the table. Evans was not available for comment monday but athletic director by cop Pedge said in a Telephone interview from Annapolis Paul is the hottest property in America right now. Everybody in the world is looking at Coppedge said he has been contacted by a minimum of a dozen universities concerning the availability of Evans. The list is believed to include Southern Cal Houston Pitt Northwestern and South Carolina. He s obviously an outstanding Man and Well do everything we can to keep him Coppedge said. But there Are some limitations on How far Navy can the Academy because of its High Aca Demic standards and a required four year service hitch following graduation cannot recruit effectively with most major schools. Still Evans has posted a 119-60 record at Navy reaching a 30-5 level this season with a team headed by 7-foot Junior David Robinson. Seeded Only seventh in the East regional the middies reached the final eight by upending Tulsa stunning Syracuse on its Home floor and edging upstart Cleveland state. I m sure Paul will visit everybody and then come in and discuss it with us cop Pedge said. I would t want to evaluate our chances of keeping him but Well do everything we
