European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 3, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday april 3, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 19 commentary i 0 i. If a four in t meant for big domes Over the next five years the site of the final four will alternate Between three domed stadiums which seat from 35,000 to 60,000 fans and two traditional Arenas which have about 17,000 seats. Beyond 1991, the National collegiate athletic association basketball committee is considering selecting Only huge domed stadiums for the final four primarily to ease the ticket crunch that exists when games replayed in the smaller Arenas. But the fervent Hope Here is that the nine member committee will at least continue to alternate the final four Sites Between tradition and tickets. Ideally basketball does t belong in domed stadiums. Too Many seats Are too far from the court. To put a basketball game in a dome with say 50,000 seats is As impractical As playing baseball or football in a stadium with 150,000 seats. If you re in a faraway seat you really can t see what s happening. About All you can say is that you were there but you would probably wish you weren t. Using Only domed stadiums with a minimum of 30,000 seats for basketball also would limit the final four to those six cities with such stadiums and sufficient hotel rooms new Orleans next year s sit Seattle the 1989 sit Indianapolis and Minneapolis one of which will be chosen this summer As the 1991 sit Houston and Pontiac Mich. The Carrier dome in Syracuse has More than 30,000 seats but that City s hotel room capacity is not deemed Large enough to handle a final four influx. In 1988, the final four will be at the 16,668-seat Kemper Arena in Kansas City in 1990, it will be at the 17,022-seat Mcnichols Arena in Denver. By alternating traditional Arenas the Mcaa would continue to move the final four to other areas of the nation befitting a National championship. Especially to areas that have never had it. Dave Andrei san if the Mcaa were to use Only the big domed stadiums for example Byrne Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford n.j., the Host of the East regional again next year would never fulfil its ambition to be a final four site. That s the problem that will confront the Mcaa basketball committee when it convenes with officials of the National association of basketball coaches a their annual meeting in july. If you were to ask the members of the committee right now How they Felt they would probably prefer the Large domed stadiums because of the ticket crunch we be had Here in Dallas with Only 16,000 seats David Cawood an Mcaa assistant executive director was saying before sunday night s championship game. But by the time the committee meets in july some members will be supporting the traditional according to Cawood the availability of two or three times As Many tickets will be More of a Factor in the decision than the increased income at least $1 million from More tickets. With our to contract that is Worth about $36 million annually Cawood said the amount of ticket income has never entered into our discussions. The committee seems to be More concerned with the total number of tickets that would enable More spectators to attend the games. But it s also Nice to have an event that has a Tough ticket. In a domed stadium the ticket might lose some of its in a domed stadium a basketball game also loses some of its Appeal for Many spectators. By its nature a domed stadium is built for football and baseball games with vast playing areas that can be surrounded with seats. But on a basketball court the action is much More compact. For that reason the seating capacity needs to be much More compact As it is in the traditional Arenas. But the Only ones who like the atmosphere in a Small Arena Are the ones who can get inside John Thompson the Georgetown coach who is president of the coaches association has said. People who support these teams All year Are entitled to participate. The final four has become such a big event it s Only fair to put it in a big for this year s final four at the reunion Arena each of the four competing colleges were limited to a total of Only 1,700 tickets. Of the 1,700 tickets received by Duke University Only 170 were made available to Duke students in a lottery in contrast to 3,000 student tickets at each Duke Home game. Most of Duke s other final four tickets went to College officials the athletic department and alumni. When the final four is held in a domed stadium More tickets exist for students and alumni of the four competing colleges. But bigger in t necessarily better especially when bigger Only exists in the Louisiana super Doc the kingdom the Hoosier dome the metro Doc the Astrodome and the Silver Doc. Every other Quality Arena in America would be ignored because it does t have a minimum of 30,000 seats. For the 1991 final four site the Mcaa will pick Indianapolis or Minneapolis. Bids from buildings hoping to be the Host of the 1992 final four won t be accepted until december but by then the Mcaa basketball committee May have decreed that Only domed stadiums need apply.
