   European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 9, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Wednesday april 9, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 7 hearings set on disposal of chemical weapons by Norman Black a military writer Washington the army said monday that twill conduct eight Public hearings across the country on How to dispose of aging chemical weapons. The army announced Jan. 23 that it had tentatively decided to destroy the old weapons by incineration but had made no decision on where to do so. Among the alternatives to be assessed Are destroying the stockpile on site where they Are currently located or co locating them to regional or National Sites for disposal the army said. To explore those alternatives Public hearings have been scheduled near the eight depots within the Continental United states where chemical weapons Are stockpiled the army said monday. The hearings will begin in Oregon on april 25 and conclude May 22 in Alabama. In addition seven meetings have been scheduled from april 22 to May 8 with representatives of the Environ mental Protection Agency and state officials to assess the problems that might arise with the transportation of the chemical weapons to incineration centers the army said. The United states has not produced chemical weapons since 1969. The Pentagon has warned that the stockpile of chemical weapons has become outdated and in Many in stances dangerous to store. Until last year Congress refused to authorize the production of More modern chemical weapons to replace existing stockpiles. But the Pentagon s fiscal 1986 budget authorization sanctions the Start of limited production next year while calling for the destruction of existing stocks by sept. 30, 1994. Army and Pentagon officials have routinely refused to say How Large the existing stockpile is although source shave placed the total at roughly 25 tons. A final environmental Impact statement is expected to be published in december setting the stage for a decision in Early 1987, the army said.
