European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 12, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday april 12, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers my husband hashed a 15-year Friend ship with Stan buddy from College. He was my Friend also the Type who could be a a few weeks Agoo Stan came for the weekend. He had a business meeting in our City and stayed with us. When my Hus band was out doing a chore Stan suddenly confessed that he had been crazy about me for years and if i Ever Felt like leaving my husband he would be there for me. I was dumbfounded absolutely speechless. I never suspected that Stan had any such feelings. I told him i was in love with my husband and that he should get any idea about us getting together out of his head. The next Day Stan left and i told my husband believing it was the right thing to do. He did t react at first just said gee i never thought Stan would pull anything like that. He always seemed like such a True i thought that would be the end fit. I was wrong. The following weekend Stan called to say he was coming Back to town and would like to stay with us again. My husband yelled you re not Welcome in this House. And Don t Call Here he Hung up an muttered How do you like the guts of that Guy i am sick about this Ann. They were such great friends. What can i do to get them Back together i tried to smooth things Over but was told never to bring up Stan s name again. I m surprised at my husband s violent reaction. Please Advisee. Friendship in ashes in Indiana dear ashes Why Are you surprised that the Friend ship is in ashes you re the one who lit the match. Stan was a Heel to make a move on you but you did t exactly cover yourself with glory when you squealed on him. Forget the Patch Job. It will never happen. Dear Ann Landers this is for ticked off in Portland, ore.," who wrote if there is a malfunctioning Coin operated newspaper dispenser in this town it will find he was so angry he threatened to sue in Small claim court. Being in the business i have heard that same complaint from dozens of people who Are burned up because they lost their dimes and quarters. We receive numerous Calls every Day about machines that Are jammed. Almost always when we go to Check out the machine we discover that i functions perfectly. The reason the Public perceives the machine to be out of order is that people never want to take the first paper on the stack. They seem always to prefer the third paper Down. They say it looks the two top papers then shift causing the door to close ajar. Unless the next Patron pushes the door in before depositing his Quarter the door will not open this occurs thu Coin return will not function. My advice to your readers is to take the top paper from the stack and encourage your friends to do likewise. Jim Engle circulation Chicago Sun time dear Jim i did t realize i had such an articulate authority on the subject right in my very own building. Thanks for being such an eloquent spokesman for the beleaguered dispensers. You have nobly acquitted the unjustly maligned. Readers share opinions about Gramm Rudman Bill those of us who have been in the military for any length of time have seen Many variations of budget problems especially a october approaches and we wonder if con Gress will pass the new budget so that Pecan be paid and carry on with Mission essential programs. Now we have the Gramm Rudman hol Lings balanced budget act and beginning with the permanent change of station extensions we hear moans and cries of the military is taking it in the shorts again Don t get me wrong i m All for the Basic premise behind the Gramm Rudman Law. A household cannot go on indefinitely spending More than it takes in. The same applies to governments As Louis Xvi found out much to his painful demise in 1789. Fiscal responsibility dictates we must find away to reduce budget deficits but there is a larger Issue at stake Here. I even agree that there is fat which can be trimmed from the defense budget As there is fat which can be trimmed fro mall Cabinet department and Federal Agency budgets. But to make 79 percent of the budget untouchable and to require that 50 percent of All budget cuts come from the defense budget which com Prises somewhere on the order of 20 per cent of the total budget is to make de sense a Scapegoat and not Force necessary reductions in other areas. Social programs constitute Over 50 per cent of the budget and despite fat in Many of them they Are in the exempt category. Congress must be willing to cur spending in parochial interests no refer ence to the Catholic Church but rather to interests which Benefit Only a Small constituency. But just mention closing a base in some congressional District an see How quickly it becomes an Issue. Mention restructuring tax Laws to close loopholes which allow big business and the wealthy to pay less than their while the Middle class shoulders the majority of the tax Burden. Suggest restructuring welfare and re Quiring Able bodied recipients to perform Community service work and watch How quickly welfare mothers appear on "60 minutes sporting designer clothes an Gold jewelry yes such a segment was actually broadcast a couple years ago. Suggest tighter policing of medicare buses and listen to screams of prejudice against the poor and elderly. We have the privilege of being the wealthiest nation on Earth things which we discard or take for granted Are things people in poorer countries could never Hope to have in a lifetime. We Are one of the most powerful nations on Earth economically politically and militarily. That is a concept we As a nation have never been comfortable with. We Are also the freest nation on Earth. Freedoms we take for granted Are simply unheard of by ple of other nations. All this wealth Power and Freedom we enjoy has a Price and a responsibility. We Veall heard the saying Freedom in t without us the military the wealth Power and Freedom we take so much for granted will be lost. And there in lies the larger Issue. Parochial interests ignorance and Apa thy Are the enemies of that Freedom. They allow yet another enemy and we Al know Vjio that is to encroach daily on our lives. How Many read sen. Moynihan s recent article on soviet monitoring of Ordinary Telephone Calls in major american cities Congress must realize this and realize that National interests demand a Strong defense. This Means tightening the Bel across the Board not making defense and a few other programs the Scapegoat for capricious Federal spending. We Are finally starting to recover fro the second class citizen status we suffered during the previous administration we can t go Back to that. One Man told me several years ago speaking of the military i d rather have you and not need you than need you an not have if defense is made to take the Brunt of Gramm Rudman the Latte May occur. Capt. Karen e. Toenjes Hahn a Germany a recent writer urged us to get out an vote that s a Good Long term solution to the problems that face members of the military. What we need is a Short term solution to what i perceive As the mos significant threat to our pay and benefits since president Carter held the seat of Power. If you disagree with the Gramm Rud Man Hollings act write your Congress Man or woman now so far this year behave seen delays in pcs moves causing a variety of family hardships. Recently a article from a stateside newspaper warned of a Home Loans being delayed until october 1986. I Hope interest rates Don t increase before then what will happen next year definitely no pay raise. Cuts in Hospital benefits perhaps reductions in weight allow ances it s Likely that weapons procurements will charge ahead full Speed. Members of Congress have to protect voters in state which produce these weapons. People Grams will have to Bear the Brunt of Cost cutting moves to line up with the require ments of the Law. One other thing. Don t wait for the supreme court to declare the Law unconstitutional. That might not happen. Write that letter. You can obtain the name and address of your congressman or woman from the base Legal office or base Library. Master sgt. Stephen j. Dubois Ramstein Germany it s about time the United states an Congress stood up for its military instead of taking everything away from us. Whenever the country gets into a deficit crunch Congress wants to Cut from the military. We fight to keep the morale Ospur people High but Congress cuts it Down in no time. How Many cuts in pay or benefits haste congressional regime taken gis Don t live in big fancy houses drive big cars have maids and butlers. We have to have usually two people working in our families just to make ends meet. How Many con Gressional wives have to work just to put food on the table or put children through school the Dod wants to Cut 330,000 military by May 1, How Many Over the Hill senators Are getting paid and could be let go when the military gets a pay raise it does t amount to much because the econ omy raises their prices to take it from us. Military usually gets a 3 percent raise and have to fight to get that while Congress gets substantially More. How Many countries has the United states loaned Aid to and never receive anything Back maybe it s time we called in some of our other assets instead of jus giving All the time. Charity begins at Home. When the Congress and Dod Cut the military and All the gis get out what kind of a Force will we have How Man congressmen and senators will take up arms and be shipped off to a foreign country to protect the soil of the United states you can bet there won t be very Many. So let s Lay off the military for awhile and the retirement there is never any talk about cutting Back the congressional retirement. Why do sex presidents need to get retirement and go right Back into High paying Job some place else if the political body gave up 10 percent of their pay for a year it sure would help the deficit. Tech. Sgt Bud j. Linardy senior airman Thomas e. Johnson sgt. Kenneth m. Martin . Patrick j. Cook Pitburg a Germany Over the past several months i have read a number of articles regarding the Gramm Rudman grim reaper act an the congressional mandate to reduce fed eral government contributions to the retirement system. There Are a number of conclusion which i draw from these and other con Gressional actions. First of All All of the ramifications of the Gramm Rudman act were not properly staffed prior to its enactment. My conclusion that the demo cratic controlled Congress was More inter ested in buying american votes for the 1986 elections. Secondly Gramm Rudman essentially forces the president to raise taxes to retain essential services and programs. Of course the democrats will then claim that presi Dent Reagan reneged on his Campaign Promise not to raise taxes. It All boils Down to political self can tiredness. Our politicians Are More inter ested in their re election than dealing without debt problems in a Way which ensures the country has adequate Security and so Cial programs to the truly needy. I for one have decided to Register to vote for the 1986 elections and vote against each incumbent who is running for the Senate and House. We need fresh blood and new ideas ideas which will help our country through these difficult Don t need politicians who have self interests or allegiances to special interest groups.
