European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 18, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday april 18, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 25 outdoor i preparation gets season started right the 1986 Hunting year is finally Here. Although it was Only last december i was feeling those end of the season blues it seemed to take forever to see a Crocus in my Yard and the first of april which starts the Hunting season in Europe. There s actually Little wild game to Hunt in april so i normally use the month to prepare for my favorite pastime that goes with the Roebuck season from mid May to october. The first thing is to buy the required liability insurance and then renew the Hunting License. In the last few years i be made it a Point to take care of this Early in april. I Learned my lesson about waiting too Long several years ago when the Buck season was Only a Day or two away. My leave was approved i had All my gear organized had cleaned the Rifle and checked the Zero. I was ready except for a minor yet important detail the paperwork. I had the insurance and figured getting the License was just a matter of going to the appropriate City office. I was right almost. So i headed downtown one afternoon just Days be fore the season was about to open. I found the office locked. The clerk who renewed Hunting licenses had Mark Swearingen just left to take care of some unexpected problem at Home. Please come Back tomorrow they told me. I went Back the next Day. Of sorry. Since you live in a neighbouring town you must get your License from the county office i was told. I finally found the right building about 1 . I also found a sign on the main door that said offices were closed for lunch and would reopen at 2 30. Of i thought. But i was really starting to feel victimized by bureaucracy. And even worse it was Friday. I knew the office would be closed on the week end and the season would open monday morning. I could be twiddling my thumbs monday morning in Stead of Hunting if i met one More glitch or bureaucratic Brick Wall i thought. Imagine the disgust. I had made All other preparations. I had done All the daydreaming that Hunters in Europe do in april and Early May. While shaving or on the Way to work or washing the car on a weekend i d had All the Normal thoughts. I d imagined the cold Spring air of Early morning the slow change from dark Ness to Light the silence then the sudden opening of Vogel Monzert or Bird concert and the seeming eternity of no movement in a wilderness of color suddenly broken by the soft approach of a Roe Deer from a Green Pine Thicket. I went Back to the county building at 2 30, checked the directory which sent me to the second floor. I still could t find the right office. What is happening 1 wondered. All i wanted to do was go Hunting. Why was renewing my License becoming impossible then i remembered How they number floors in Ger Many and realized i had the wrong floor. Minutes later i had the right floor and the right office. Suddenly what had been a string of problems was Back in order and i had my new License. This year i think i m ready. I be done All the preseason dreaming i be located my Hunting clothes binoculars and other equipment. And soon i Hope to enjoy once again those simple wonderful hours out in the Woods somewhere that can happen so easily with a Little planning. Yanks Whitson special target for Wrath by John Nelson new York a although he has t been traded by the new York Yan Kees Pitcher de Whitson has already left the City at least in spirit. Whitson who helped pitch the san Diego padres into the 1984 world series before signing a big Money free agent contract with new York has been the special target of the Yankee stadium boo Birds after losing six of his first seven decisions last season. After a bad Outing in his first Start this season he asked to be traded. In an Effort to insulate Whitson Yankees manager Lou Piniella decided to put him in the bullpen at Home and in the starting rotation on the Road. The Experiment began Friday with the Yankees in Milwaukee. Whitson of course in t the Only player to draw the Wrath of fans. His Case is somewhat different some what sadder because his family has become involved. He feels he can t even Wear a Yankee Cap or any team insignia outside the Ballpark for fear of becoming a target. He received letters threatening his life and those of his wife Kathleen Ann and 4-year old daughter Jennifer. People waited for him outside Yankee stadium after games not even necessarily games that he had pitched to scream obscenities at him. And perhaps most frightening of All for Whitson someone placed nails under the tires of his car parked in his driveway at Home. Lost amid All this was the fact that Whitson went 9-2 after his 1-6 Start to finish the year with a 10-8 record. He lowered his Era from 6.23 on june 6 to 4.88 by season s end and was after All a pretty decent Pitcher working under difficult circumstances. But his late season surge was marred by a Brawl with former manager Billy Martin during the last week of the season. Whitson angered when Martin dropped him from the rotation confronted his Man Ager in a Baltimore hotel bar. The fight left Martin with a broken and cracked ribs and Whitson with a bruised ego. The problems continued for Whitson last week when he worked just 2% innings in a 7-4 loss to Kansas City giving up three earned runs on six hits. He was booed when he was introduced booed when he took the Mound for the first time and when he exited it was again to a rancorous Shower of Boos. After the game Whitson disappeared but Catcher Butch Wynegar said on the Mound Eddie said he just could t pitch under these later Whitson said i can take All this on my own shoulders but i can t look after my daughter and wife when i m on the Road. They enjoy coming out to the Ball Park but not Here anymore
