European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 23, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday april 23, 1986 the stars and stripes Arin Lander Page 11 dear Ann Landers these Days when so Many people Are cynical and tend to insensitive and uncaring i witnessed something that re stored my Faith in humanity. I d like to share it with you. Recently i sat across from a Man on the new York subway. His coat was tattered and torn held together with pins and string. His Trou Sers were in no better shape. He had holes in his shoes and he wore no socks. The poor fellow looked As if he had t had a Bath in weeks. I tried not to stare looking left right up and Down but i could t keep my eyes off him. I never saw anyone who was so Dowland out. Just before my Stop As the train came to a halt a neatly dressed elderly woman walked the length of the car to the door next to where i was seated although there were doors Down at the other end where she had come from. She handed the pathetic stranger a Dollar Bill and said with great dignity i believe you dropped the startled old Man reached out took the Dol Lar and said thank there was nothing on the floor before the woman came of that i am positive. That Vignette made me think of How wonderfully generous and kind people can . I Learned a lot about life that Day. Jim b., Brooklyn . Daily news Reader dear Jim what a heartwarming Story what you Learned from witnessing that incident is something we All need to reminded of. These Days when Man s inhumanity to Man is so visible when there is so much brutality and violence in the world there is also compassion love and generosity of spirit. That woman on the train symbolized the Best in All of us. It s there. We can make this a better world if each of us will Start with ourselves. Dear Ann Landers your correspondent who wrote about fraternity hazing prompted my first letter to newspaper. The social life of Many colleges and universities revolves around fraternities. Our son who is a Junior at Dartmouth suffered minor injuries during a hazing ritual and was a patient at the medical Center. We found out about it Only when the Hospital billed us. We telephoned at once to find out what had happened. They said sorry your son is 18 years old and his treatment is confidential. You la have to ask him what when we telephoned our son that eve Ning he said of it was nothing serious. I m perfectly of. Please forget about it my husband and i realized it would do no Good to press for More information cause we weren t going to get it. Fraternity oaths Are held sacred and nobody squeals. The Best we can do is Hope and Pray that our son and other Young men stay sober enough that they Don t become involved in anything life threatening or crazy. Anonymous on Long Island dear anon a phone Call to Dartmouth revealed that hazing is illegal up there. If those who Are injured even slightly won t complain to the authorities very Little can done about it. Dear Ann Landers i am still laughing about the person who asked if there was such a thing As Blue milk. You said Adderly you were wrong my Little Lamb. Blue milk comes from cows who mood indigo. Fat in Talladega Wartalla not a aaa a Aad readers wishing to write to news America Syndi Cate columnist Landers May address their letters in care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211, . Forces readers respond to bedroom allowance letter when i read the letter signed suffocating in our Home i just could t help giving my opinion on the matter of bedroom allowances. After hearing so Many people complain about not having enough room in government quarters because they had so Many children one can t help but wonder if these people planned their families keeping in mind the limitations of government housing. No one has to live in government hous ing anyway. If it s so terrible rent a House with enough space in it for everyone to have their own bedroom. Last i heard soldiers were Given allow ances in their checks to help pay for rent for apartments off Post. I know it does t pay the entire rent but it helps. For Large families Money May pinched at times but when people Are plan Ning a family Money should one of the considerations. No matter How you Cut it children Cost Money. Soldiers and their families already receive free medical care Low priced shop Ping free Home repairs for people in government quarters and Many Many other Perks. What More do you want the army can Only do so much for the people in it and their families. There is a Point where people have to take some Initia Tive and help themselves As horrible As that idea May seem. Victoria Harbin Pir Masens Germany i read the letters from Many people who have complained about the bedroom Al Well please let me say some thing too. V my husband and i Are one of the couples who should stay in three bedroom base housing while we stay Here. When we first got Here the housing office told us that they had no three bedrooms for us yet. We would have to wait for about three months or so or we May stay in two bedrooms and then sign up for three bed rooms after one year. Well we stayed in the hotel Long enough official explains hiring practices i m writing in concern about the civilian personnel office hiring policy. I recently received in the mail a letter from co saying i was rated eligible for subject position however another qualified candidate was selected. Now i was not called for an interview for the position of medical clerk or any other Job i have applied for now they say equal employment opportunities. I have worked in a Hospital for seven years and come Over Here to Germany Only been Here for six months and i feel cheated out of that position and others. The Only thing i can do Here is a bus Monitor. I do not believe a College education pays off Over Here. When you go to the states you see people in the streets or bag ladies people working at Mcdonald s or Burger King that have a College education andean t get work. People at the co Don t give a person a Chance. I have put 10 applications in since i been Here and no Luck. I want people to know about this and what can done if this matter happens again. Linda j. Taylor Mainz Germany editor s note Donald Dixon civilian personnel division office of the Deputy chief of staff personnel he Usa eur responds like the writer Many applicants believe the civilian personnel office is responsible for their not being selected for certain jobs. However the co merely provides a serv ice to selecting officials management referring applicants who meet eligibility and qualification requirements to them for consideration to fill jobs. Selecting officials Are the supervisors in the organizations where the Job is located they make the selections. Some selecting officials interview the applicants who have been referred for consideration others do not interview. This is their option. When applicants Are not interviewed the selecting official makes his or her selection decision based on a review of the application submitted. All applicants Are Given equal employ ment Opportunity. This Means that they can apply for positions and considered for employment without regard to any non Merit Factor. Consideration for employment is based on factors solely related to the qualification experience education train ing performance for a specific position. Equal employment Opportunity does not mean that an applicant is guaranteed employment. As much As we would like to provide employment to All applicants this is riot possible in Europe because there Are generally More applicants than jobs Avail Able. Additionally the employment application also plays an important part in the employ ment process. Does it fully describe the applicant s background and present an accurate picture of experience skills knowl Edge abilities education and training re lated to the Job to the selecting official the co can advise or refer applicants to seminars sponsored various groups on How to prepare an application. We wish you Success in obtaining suitable employ ment. With one baby. I just wanted to get out of the hotel so we took two bedrooms. The House in t bad Only i and my Hus band would like to have our own work my child is growing up and she s getting into everything she lays her eyes on. Well with a Little talk and explaining to her it was t easy but she knows what to play with and not to play with. Now my husband uses every Corner of the House. The bedroom Corner is my sew ing Corner and we Don t mind that. Every thing has been great. Of course if we had a Choice we would like More space. Our name has come up on the list for a three bedroom House now. / and my Hus band have decided not to take it. The Rea son we have made this House to our Home even if it is a Little Small for us. Another reason is we have seen Many ple with Many children and they Don t have enough room. So we arc sacrificing for them and that makes us feel Good. You see the Point is not All of us authorized to stay in big places live there. We have the Choice but we do not take it. Our friends always ask us about Why we have smaller quarters when we should have bigger quarters. Now i Don t care what they think but i know i feel Good that we sacrifice for others that need the room More. I never thought i would write and Tell other people what i and my husband have done but so Many people have complained so 1 think you should know that not All ofus Are the same. I have Only been Here since june of 1985. Germany is a Nice country and the people Are of except the terrorists. The terrorists were named right because they cause a lot of terror. They really scare me a lot when i hear they have blown something up especially if it is on a base that s close to Sembach. My dad is in the air Force and went try to Rhein main a and the Day after he got there they blew the parking lot up in front of his Barracks. That really scared me cause my dad could have been Hurt. Why do the terrorists want to Hurt ple maybe we could have peace talks or something like that with them. Maybe there s something our people could do to help Stop them from hurting anyone else.
