September 22,1987 the stars and stripes Page 23 Union prepares for Long strike if you walk you re walking for the season by Dave Goldberg new York a picket signs were shipped tonal cities and Union Leaden told players to prepare to walk out for the season As the league braced for i second strike in six seasons barring a last minute settlement the strike was to Start following monday s new England patriots new York Jeu game unless As management s Jack Donlan put it someone Pulli a Rabbit out of a no talk were planned and the Union s Gene up Shaw said All thai was lacking was the official announcement scheduled to come at halftime. We have to be willing to walk out for the season he said. Whenever i be talked to a team i said look one thing you have to understand if you walk you re walking Tor the season i Don t want anyone to think it s going to be a week a Day two Days. It s Tor the duration and they know that. Upshaw the executive director of the nil players association said he stayed Al Union Headquarters i Washington All night sunday and was Back Early Mon Day morning. "1 have to be Here in Case Jack Calls but looking at their schedule i know that in t going to happen up thaw said. They re have a meeting of their executive committee in new York. If they re out there getting ready for a strike Why should i sit Here on my hands waiting for a phone Call i have to get out and get my troops ready Upshaw said drawing up a new collective bargaining agreement would take at least three Days. Therefore he said unless there is a last minute Deal it would be practically impossible to have games on sunday. I would think you could Hammer out a Deal in the matter of a Day but it wit take two or three Days to do the language Upshaw said. One thing we have to make sure of this time is that the language is right. In 1982 we had the agreements in principle and the play ers Well right to work. When they went to work we lost millions of dollars in the language of the contract that was eventually drawn up. That s How they got the $18 million in part of the Union s demands this year is thai management repay j18 million in what the a Flea Calls delinquent contributions plus interest up Shaw contends the owners cheated the Union out of that much Money when the 1982 contract was finalized. The owners plan to 40 on with the season breaking for a week then continuing with the fourth week schedule using players released in training Camp or literally from off the Street. Some teams life Indiana Polis say they already have full rosters others have barely More than one or two players signed. Players seemed resigned to having a strike it s kind of a bittersweet feeling said Mike Quick or Philadelphia after the eagles beat new Orleans on sunday. I m Happy with the win but it hurts when you realize there May be a strike just when we re coming of some were still hoping for a last minute Deal it s Tough to walk out now but miracles do Hap pen said Minnesota s Greg Colenan. Hopefully inthe 11 the hour something some had mixed feelings though they said they would Honor picket lines the strike will eat me alive said Howie Long of the los Angeles raiders. I have a wife and son and Gene Upshaw s not supporting my wife and son no supporting my financial ability. Like i said before the strike is not for Howie Long ii gets to a Point where the owners want to show How much Power they have end the Union Wells to show How much Power ii has said the rams Eric Dickeson. I be Gatia cat the Basic Issue in the current dispute is the demand by the Union for free Agency for players who have completed four full seasons in the league the owners Are so far willing to give them Only a liberalized ver Sion of the current system of compensation under which Only one player has changed teams in 10 years. But underlying thai is a simple Lack of communications Between the two sides a problem that was supposed to have ended when Upshaw succeeded de Garvey As the Union s executive director in 1983. The two sides have met 19 limes formally and informally since first exchanging proposals april 20 and barely moved on their positions. Each tide has made just one counterproposal and those came Only within the last iwo weeks. The last meeting was a Faccio face session betwee Donlan and Upshaw last Friday in Washington. Don Ian offered to make concessions on issues such As pen Sion and roster size if the players would extend the strike deadline 30 Days. Owners say that session con Vinced them there was just one Issue free Agency. The other things Are nothing Tex Schramm president of the Dallas cowboys and a member of in management Council executive committee said. If you eliminated free Agency you would t have any trouble with the other things and there would t be any but Upshaw said sunday thai he had offered to modify his proposal in Friday s meeting with Donlan. There Are ways we could Combine the system and free Agency and make it work we need someone to make he Deal Upshaw said.
