European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - May 16, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers letters dear Ann Landers you recently printed a letter from a divorced woman in san Malco who said she had put her 8-Ycar-old on a plane to visit his father. Your correspondent stated that the airline look Good care of the child and that they had darned Well better because hey charge full fare for children who travel alone. You asked Why the extra charge you can t be serious Ann. That child takes up a seat eats and drinks almost As much As an adult and demands extra attention i can t believe you could t figure that Oul. New Orleans or n.oj1 had new riven it a in ought Bat great Muty readers Hud plenty to Sty on the subject. The mail he been mind Boru i. Read air. From Lake Forest. 111. Not Only does a Parent pay full fare for a child who travels alone 120 is added if the child is Between 8 and 11 and it s a connecting Light. This ensures that the child will be delivered to a person who must produce identification As proof that lie or she is the one Sulho sized to meet the youngster. The peace of mind is certainly Worth the estra Money. Wake up Annie. From san Franciso Many readers will Call me Nasty names but i wish the airlines would inaugurate child free flights. I d be willing to pay an additional 25 percent for a trip with no crying babies no mothers Yelling you re going 10 catch it when we get Home and no kids throwing up All Over my shoes. From Dallas i am a flight attendant who wishes the airlines would not allow children to travel alone. I be seen parents put kids on planes with nothing to do for four hours no colouring books no toys no games. I had one of those youngsters last week. She rang my Call Button at least 15 times and went to the bathroom every 10 minutes. I m rethinking motherhood. From Columbus Ohio a kid who appeared to be about 7 years old kicked the Back of my Seal Al the Way from Cleveland to new York. When tasked the flight attendant to ask him to Stop she said sorry i be got 57 meals to serve. You ask from Vienna Vaas an airline agent at the Hub of a regional Jet car Rier i can Tell you that unaccompanied minors Are a frequent sight. While these Little Darlings Are wailing for their connecting flights you need a radar screen to keep track of them. And you ask Why they have to pay full fare they should pay double from Detroit we sent our 10-year-old daughter from Detroit to fort Laud Crdal last february. She and her two seat mates who were younger were virtually ignored by the airline personnel. When the Cabin became cold my daughter asked for a Blanket. She was told they arc Alt the two younger children slept huddled under my daughter s coat. So much for service people these Days. From Vancouver lost year i was visiting my Mother. My two Chil Dren 1 and 8, were with me. Mom became seriously ill and i had to stay and Lake care of her. 1 was worried lick about sending the kids Back Home to los Angeles alone but i had no Choice. The fight attendants in Vancouver were angelic. Both my daughters were Given Junior flight attendant pins and allowed to help pass peanuts. When they called me from Fresno they said mom when we grow up we Are going to work on air planes readers comment on maternity leave pm writing in response to the letter addressing the Issue of pregnant female soldiers. In my total time of 5vi years in the army 3 i years of being stationed in Germany and Reading the tellers to the editor faithfully every Day never have i been More compelled to write to your paper. 1 would like to ask the writer if she has Ever been in the military if she has Ever been by months pregnant and called in at 2 or 3 in the morning for an Alert of and Don t forget she must be at her unit within 30 minute to one hour after being called so can you imagine that plus if she has other kids trying to gel them ready Etc.? to think that people May feel that eight hours is too much for a pregnant Soldier. Eight hours is Long enough. But everybody has to follow the regulations and Bear it. Also if you d like for your husband to be Home at 3 or 4 p.m., Why Don t you let him gel out of the service and you enlist and. For heaven s Sake Don t get preg Nant. I Don t know whom you have been talking to hut when a woman has a caesarean. 30 Days to recuperate is a very Short Lime after major surgery. So please Don t judge unless you know the facts. Spec. 4 Mary l. Pitlon a Atzingen West Germany i am a female Soldier. In november 1586 i had a caesarean due to the fact i had a Breech birth. 1 received four weeks convalescent leave. My husband is also in the military and he took leave at this time Loo. I am due to deliver again any Day. As it stands right now i am facing another caesarean because again the baby is Breech Sinee this woman is not in he service How can she say anything about maternity leave does she know anything about the duties and Job that the female sol Dier is raced with during her pregnancy not to men Tion when she comes Back to work after Only four weeks of convalescent leave Why would the male Soldier of a female dependent need 30 Days off did he have the baby himself 1 Sec male soldiers get 30 Days convalescent leave for hav ing a Cut on the Finger. You should t complain about 3d Days off duty for a caesarean my 40-hour workweek began in the 28th week. The female Soldier is in Mal Emily bus and combat boots and is expected to perform her duties As usual whether she is sick or feeling Fine. A female Soldier has to go to work regardless of her health. That is Why she s put on a 40-hour work week schedule. She can t lit at Home in bed or on a sofa because she does t feel like doing anything. Spk.4cynlhlig.Mil Wildfi relm writ Germany you sound to me As if you Are pregnant Hove sever Al Small children Are physically exhausted and no one is listening to you. The Bottom line is thai you must learn to Start doing some things for yourself instead of wasting precious Energy complaining about someone else getting what they work for. Arc you and your husband sharing chores so you won t gel so tired does he care for the other children after work and on weekends you can get some rest Are you spending a lot of time doing unnecessary household chores daily that could instead he done once a week without the health department knocking Down your door you and the children can cat off the cheapest paper plates in the commissary so you won t have so Many dishes to Wash and most ironing is totally unnecessary if you need help maybe you and your husband can juggle your budget so you can afford to hire help like some women soldiers do. Or you and other women who do not choose to work outside the Home notice i said outside the Home can take turns giving each other a much needed break so you can rest. Or you and your husband can plan his leave so that he can slay Home and help you. If none of these solutions will work for you iry calling the us outreach program or family advocacy program in your Community. They have trained staffs who help people Deal with problems like yours every Day. Good Luck. Suit ski. Brenda j. So Hinnon Mainz West Gennity the importance of a stairwell coordinator this is one of those lessons Learned letters. However 1 Hope the lesson Learned is by gossiping neighbors and a misguided stairwell coordinator. I was recently arrested at 9 30 on a Friday night by the military police. My kids were crying my husband totally bewildered and frustrated my House guest frightened out of her mind. The original charge based upon speculation by my neighbors was a pretty serious charge that May have warranted such treatment. The final charge was a fairly minor housing violation that could have easily been handled by my housing Chain of command. We hear so much about taking care of soldiers. 1 absolutely approve and do whatever 1 con but what about senior officers taking care of Junior officers i believe my stairwell coordinator let me hang. In All fairness i must admit my Chain of command is completely behind me and Are helping me to sort this me Oul. If my stairwell coordinator had Lakin the Lime to talk to me he could have helped me avoid this ugly situation. If he fell the situation was beyond him he could have at least turned it Over to my building coordinator i Don t even think my building coordinator was aware there was a problem. My recommendation concerning this situation is. If you have legitimate questions or complaints about your neighbors take them to the stairwell coordinator. 1c you Are a stairwell coordinator keep in mind one of your responsibilities is to help me keep straight with regards to the housing regulations and request assistance from the building coordinator if e fail to respond to your guidance. Life in the military is quite different from civil Ian life and living in Europe presents even More challenges. We must All focus on the positive aspects of life and try to help each other through this experience rather than running around trying to bust each other Over a misunderstanding.
