European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - June 16, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday june 18, 1988 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep pick s of was another Good Dodds year the selection of Hahn s Charlene Johnson and Ramstein s Chris Killcy As the 1987-bs stars and stripes athletes of the year rang Down the cur lain on another year of Dodds sports activities. What kind of a year was ii the i9lh full so Jison since prep Pickin s was named the is prep sports editor was piled with Many Good things Ramstein and Giessen continuing to sparkle. The restoration of the Italy program and the establishment of a . Dodds Atlantic championship playoff in football Gissen s boys basketball team chalking up its third straight Small schools title and running its win Ning Streak to 42 Gamis As coach Charlie Toth picked up his third straight is coach of the year certificate Wiesbaden s girls and Stuttgart s boys taking big schools Cage lilies and Fulda s girls winning the Small schools title with a perfect Campaign that earned for coach Stephanie Steadman recognition As coach of the year three Dodds records in track and Field Cicet Cra. And As always there were some happenings that weren t so Good Dodds being compelled to award varsity let ters to members of non High school swimming earns the apparent collusion of the Germany aaa and a football coaches in refusing to recommend player for is All Europe consideration unless they had been named All conference players in Italy not being eligible Tor All Europe recognition Dodds permitting shape to play an extra football game because it would be Al no expense to the government it Cetera Ramstein and Giessen retained their big schools and Small schools football titles respectively the royals climaxing a perfect Campaign by whipping Numberg 37-13 and the Griffins avenging an Early season loss to unbeaten Munich by Hammer ing the Mustangs 55-0 to record their seventh straight shutout. It was the third straight appearance for Toth s Griffins in the title game. They lost to is in their first playoff game and beat Munich the last two years. Giessen has compiled a 24-2-1 record in us first three years As a Dodds High school. Berlin s George Pepoy. Who turned a losing pro Gram completely around and earned a playoff berth was declared coach of the year. Gissen s Calvin Peterson was named offensive player of the year and Munich s malt Killman was chosen defensive player of he year. In the Spring of 1987, Helen a Clanni then ital District schools supervisor decided to drop football because Only three teams Aviano Naples and vice Neal were competing and three teams Don t make a enough parental pressure was applied that the program was reinstated last August. The format was different because Naples and Vincnza had to Field two teams apiece making it a five team conference and eight Man Competition was installed. That eight Man formal caused a Good Deal of consternation because the games were played on Regula Tion Fields and practically every carry it seemed produced a touchdown. There was no Way to reconcile that game with 11 Man football and i made the decision that players on eight Man football teams would not be eligible for All Europe consideration. Some players in Italy certainly were Good enough to have played on any other High school team ind Odds but it just would t have been fair to com pare their achievements with those of 11-Man foot Ball competitors. Is had its 16-Gamc winning Streak snapped in a regular season game at Croughton 12-8, but the raiders prevailed in the end when they outlasted Woodbridge in the first Dodds at lactic Region championship game by an identical 12-8 score. Both Woodbridge and is finished in a three Way tie in their respective conferences. Wood Bridge advanced by winning in a playoff is advanced by virtue of a better Point differential. Thomas Volk scored a couple of key baskets half Way through the fourth period to slave off a shape rally and give the Griffins breathing space As they conquered it spartans for the second straight year in the Small schools basketball finale to run their winning string to 42 games four Short of the Dodds record that belongs to Vicenza. Told became the first Mentor to win the coach of the year accolades three straight years in fact no one before him had won two in a Row. His three year Mark at Gic Ssan stands at a Gaudy 49-2. That tourney deciding loss was inc Only one for shape in 1987-88. Actually shape suffered a much bigger toss with that game. That was the last game of Steve Sherrill s Dodds coaching career. Sherrill who has enjoyed much Success in both football and basketball has resigned from Dodds to take the head football Job Al Gillette wyo., High school. Gillette is a 10 Ihrough-12 school with 1,500 students thai competes on the 4-a level. His football record was 47-6-1 and his basketball Mark was 160-21 in seven years against Dodds and International schools including 35 straight by Tenor conference victories and five consecutive league and tournament championships. Another luminary who bade Farewell to Dodds this year was John Winkler. The sly old Fox re tired at the semester break leaving behind him a Trail of basketball championships winding France to Wiesbaden to Madrid to Mannheim to London and finally to Frankfurt. The most impressive title came in 1972 when his Mannheim Bison avenged two opening weekend thrashing at the hands of Heidelberg by beating the Lions for the pass a what would now be big schools championship 53-49. That Victory prevented the Lions from becoming the first Dodds basketball team to win four straight championships. Winkler taught and coached in Dodds for 2s i years. Impressive As Giessen s win skein is it still is far Short of he Dodds basketball record. When Amer ican school of London won its fourth straight in february its winning skein against Dodds foes reached 63 games. The eagles have won 92 straight games against Dodds and International school foes. The boys and Heidelberg girls started inc 1987-88 basketball Campaign with two straight big schools championships. Neither one garnered no. 3. Heidelberg had an off season and did t qualify for the tournament and Wiesbaden went on to beat Stuttgart in the finals and take the Crown. Wurzburg got Back into the championship game but fell to Stuttgart. Wurzburg s Mike Brown beat out Peterson for player of the year among the boys and Patch s Dani Conboy was named the outstanding girl per former. Fulda came from a 10-Poinl deficit with 2 28 left in the third Quarter to beat Hama in the Small schools girls final game in compiling a 17-0 Mark. The year ended with some excitement on the track and Field scene. Mannheim s Jay Wilson soared higher into the air than any dodds1 pole vaulter Ever had when he cleared 14 feet on found Inch. Only a week before of cents Sean Smith had cleared 13-6 to set a record. Mannheim s Sheila mar i weather set the 300-meter hurdles record twice turning in a 47 Flat in the aaa regional and then going Down to 45.86 in the finals. Wiesbaden Era edits own 12-year-old record in the 1,600-meter relay As Ken Holtham Teresa Pugh Tina Latunya end Stephanie Mcneil Blitz to a 4 03.69 clocking. Wiesbaden s Jason Beko was in a class by Himsel fas he Toped to the Central european Cross country title in the fall and finished his prep career by taking the 800-, 1,500 and 3,000.melcr crowns in the tract finals at osterholz. In some of the other Good things Heidelberg s will Sandidge ran his perfect career record to 63 wins by winning the 119-Pound Central european wrestling title Ramstein s Heather Forbes took the senior All around individual gymnastic Crown and Heidelberg s Rousha Kurit dominated the Junior Field the Heidelberg boys and Patch girls prevailed in the big schools soccer tournament with the Berlin boys and Gic Ssan girls with told handling the coaching duties capping inc Small schools laurels. Also Italy went to a big schools Small schools soccer formal and notre Dame beat Naples in a shootout to win inc former with Brindisi Brycc ing to the Small schools title London prevailed in the . And Rota beat Torr Jon while to Lake the Spain laurels in february the mandate came Down from Barbara Spyridon Pope Deputy assistant Secretary of defense for family support education and safety through Dodds Washington and newly appointed director John so Remple that High school Monogram would be awarded to High school aged members of the 18 european forces swim league clubs even though swimming was t a sanctioned sport in Dodds. The action superseded is regulation 2740.1 and is manual 2742.2 which govern inner Scholastic ath Letic programs in Dodds. Those statutes specifically ban the granting of letters in sports that Dodd does not sponsor because the system docs not Cun tool the resources nor supervise the coaches. But that was Only a regulation and with one com Mand it was abrogated. The Sefl had balled for such recognition for several years and Dodds Germany director Joseph Blackstead had successfully preserved the integrity of the varsity Block letter for High school competitors Only. But this time the Fesl Liming for ils latest ice scr recognition onslaught was perfect. The late Beth Ste Vens had resigned. There hid been a couple of temporary directors including former Dodds med director Jerry Bloom in that office before so Remple assumed his duties. Fesl people compiled an elaborate brochure Contact was made with Pope Headquarters usar eur european Congress of american parents teachers and students the advisory Council on de pendent education and the National military family association among others. I said then thai the decision was a bad one and because non High school baseball people have been applying the pressure to gel similar recognition. The letter awarding fiasco was the most negative Factor during school year 1987-88. But the aaa and a coaches certainly did t help the cause of the Dodds athlete when they got to. Gether and decided that a football player had a be selected All conference before he could be recommended for is All Europe consideration. The main reasons for my opposing such action arc that Many of the coaches have a feeling that every team should be represented on All conference squads Many coaches being human have a tendency to protect their players by rating them High and opponents of equal skill Low and that in recent years the trend has been not to vote a player to both offence and defense so More people can be accorded All conference status. If those ideas were followed it realty would t to the stars and stripes All Europe team would it Many times 1 have criticized the Dodds limited schedules but last fall when shape was permitted to add an extra game to its schedule because it had the energetic workers and ability to raise enough Money so the game would be at no Cost to the government Dodds just was t being fair to the other teams in the bin nor. Anyway the end of another year has arrived. The Good certainly outweighed the bad. I would like to Lake this Opportunity to congratulate Charlene Johnson and Chris Killcy for their special achievement and wish them inc Best in their future ventures. Johnson scintilla Ted in volleyball basketball and track and Field to win her award and Kellcy was a standout in football wrestling and soc cer in earning his. Best wishes of course go to All departing athletes coaches and administrators. I am looking Forward to greeting All the returnees and All the new people come september when we open another Dodds school sports year. Have a Good summer. Tow sum an4 8utpt
