European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - July 27, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday july 27, 1988 the stars and stripes Page 25 racing Roundup Mclaren Honda steamroller Rolls on during last sunday s German grand prix we checked out the action with Ernst Richartz of Mainz a Long time motor sports colleague who also happens to be one of Germany s top authorities on the sport. He also has a Fine sense of humor. After the race the brazilian National Anthem was played for the winning Ayrton Senna then came the British National Anthem for the winning Mclaren car. Now How about the japanese National Anthem for the Honda Turbo motor Richartz said with a sly Grin. A perfect idea. The japanese National Anthem however did not follow. But it should have. Power ing the Mclaren cars to a nine race sweep of All formula one grand prix events staged so far this season is no mean achievement. The Mclaren Chassis and Mclaren organization deserve great credit too of course because it must be noted that the Lotus cars Are also powered by Honda Turbo engines and Lotus has been totally without Success. While the Lotus Driver lineup can t match Mclaren a it is still a formidable one. After All Lotus has the defending world Champion Nelson Piquet of Bra Zil in the no. 1 Driver Slot and he should be doing far better. Yet Piquet a Winner of three world driving crowns has t come close to a Victory or even a pole position this season. The Lotus Effort has been hopeless and a Good example was presented in sunday s German grand prix. With the rain pouring Down and rain tires a necessity Piquet started on Slicks and promptly crashed in the first Lap. The German grand prix was the 150th race of his career and he deserved a kind Lier Fate. Mclaren s nine victories in a Row Are unprecedented in grand prix racing and to say that the other Turbo teams Are demoralized is an under statement. Ferrari s Drivers the Only ones with a Remote Hope for a Victory this year have Given up. The usually optimistic austrian Gerhard Berger emphasized to reporters throughout the weekend that Ferrari has no Chance to win a race this season. No those Are surprisingly Strong words and one would assume that Berger would hedge a bit if Only for Ferrari s Public rela ions purposes. The austrian is a Superb Driver and a Tiger on the track in every sense of that phrase. He s also highly personable and popular with the press and it is sad to see someone of his Fine talents giving up. The next race is the grand prix of Hungary on aug. 7, and it s a circuit that Senna says he enjoys racing on. He has the momentum now and will probably win there. And if he does to Prost who Gerhard Berger Randy Barnett needs to get going probably will. The Frenchman Prost could not keep Pace with Senna at Hocken Heim and his once Large Lead Over his brazilian team mate has dwindled to just three Points. So it will be a hard fought run for the title Between these two and As Prost said sunday it s still a Long Way to looking briefly at the German grand prix track action the rain that began falling just before the Start made the Bockenheim circuit exceedingly Slippery and dangerous. The formula one Warmup plus two preliminary races had been run in dry conditions and a lot of rubber had been put Down. And the rain that followed was never Strong enough to Wash it away. Senna who also won in the rain at Silverstone was a pleasure to watch As he drove a perfect race from pole position to the Check ered Flag. His team mate Prost who hates driving in the rain lost it All from the beginning when he made a poor Start. Berger meanwhile always impressive made a brillant Start powered past Prost and Hung onto second place until the Mclaren Honda Power proved too much. Prost got by Berger on Lap 12 to remain in second place the rest of the Way while Berger ran third As he had predicted. It was wet out in the Back and nearly dry in the stadium area Senna said after the grand prix and that made things even More difficult. Alain was pushing hard to get Back to me so i just concentrated on maintaining the Gap. Using wet tires Over the full race distance with out stopping made things a bit difficult Senna said and my tires were worn near the end. It was too much of a Gamble to Start on Slicks but Halfway through the race i thought i would pit for them. Then it started raining hard again and that was so moving past the half Way Point of the season and with seven races to go Senna has won five while Prost has won four. Prost has 60 Points Senna 57, Berger 25, Michele Albreto of Italy Ferrari 16, and Piquet 15. These Are the top five. In the formula one manufacturer s cup Mclaren Honda Turbo has it won for All practical purposes with 117 Points. Ferrari Turbo has 41, Benetton Ford 18, Lotus Honda Turbo 16, arrows megaton Turbo 10, March Judd and Williams Judd 7 each Tyrrell Ford 5 rial Ford 3, and Minardi Ford 1. Looking at a few other events Jaguar won the 1,000 Kilometres of brands Hatch last sunday with englishmen Martin Brundle and Andy Wallace and Denmark s John Nielsen sharing the driving duties. It was Jaguar s fifth Victory in seven world championship sports car rounds this season. The Sauber Mercedes team has won the other two rounds. Second behind the Jaguar were Klaus Lud wig of Germany and Bob Wollek of France in a porsche 962c, while third came Sauber Mercedes driven by Mauro Baldi of Italy and Jean Louis Schlesser of France. In the United states Geoff Brabham and John Morton took the Nissan Ftp Turbo to a record sixth straight Victory in the recent Simsa round at Road America in Elkhart Lake wis. Two porsche 962s followed with two jaguars placing fourth and fifth. The Victory also gave Brabham the son of three time world Champion Jack Brabham of Australia the Lead in the Simsa driving championship. Next round is at Portland ore., this sunday. Germany s Hans stuck meanwhile gave Audi its sixth Victory in eight Acca trans am races this season when he took the Check ered Flag last saturday at the Meadowlands circuit in East Rutherford . Stuck in a four wheel drive Audi Quattro was followed by the american Driver Hurley Haywood in another Quattro.
