European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 9, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday August 9,1988 the stars and stripes letter dear Ann Landers As the Mother of three children i simply must comment on a let Ter that appeared in your column recently. The Mother who wrote had a adopted son who caused no end of trouble. He was drinking Vodka and smoking pot at age 14, was expelled from school an stole from his Mother s purse and his father s Wallet. The three Chil Dren born after they adopted this boy were talented Loving and source of great happiness. The Mother asked Why her children were so differ ent. You said genetics has a lot to do with although my Story is the reverse i would not quarrel with your conclusion. We have two sons. The second boy was natural son was the one who caused us the heart ache. Hal was our firstborn and we waited for him for seven years. No child received More love and ado ration. Hal looked like my husband s family and was frighteningly like his Uncle Joe a slow learner with a Short attention Span stubborn As a Missouri mule and hard to get along with. My husband was the Only one of four boys who amounted to anything. He took after his Mother s Side of the family. His Brothers took after their dad. I am absolutely certain that our adopted son took after his natural parents. They were both Beautiful Bright and highly motivated. He is a picture of his Lovely Mother. I know Ann that people will argue heredity until the cows come Home and both sides will remain unconvinced but i am absolutely positive that children Are limited or enhanced by the Quality of the genetic material they inherit. J.e.b., Montgomery Alabama i m glad you wrote. Many social workers connected with adoption agencies were upset by my response. They Felt my comments would discourage adoption. One of the great mysteries of the universe is what makes some children turn out beautifully while others do poorly. We see so Many exceptions to so Many Rule that no one can say for certain whether it is nature or nurture. Surely it must be to a degree both. I stand by my original theory that genes Are powerful determinants. If you Plant radishes you should not expect roses to Bloom. Dear Ann Landers my husband and i have been married for 25 years. For at least 15 years Karl has had affairs. I kept telling myself that he would Settle Down eventually and did not scold or nag. His drinking however was an other Story. I worried about it a lot and begged him to Stop. His Standard reply was i can handle it. Get of my Karl often drives drunk. If i Call the police on him he May lose his Job with the City. He has great seniority and the Job pays Well. We Don t go out together any. More because he gets drunk so often and refuses to let me drive Home. Should i Tell Karl s Boss about his alcohol problem if i do i m afraid he will lose his Job. I m worried sick and Don t know what to do. Concerned in the Carolinas dear concerned Are you waiting for Karl to lose his life and murder fearful of innocent people for heaven s Sake woman Tell his Boss at Are programs for people like your husband and i m sure his Boss knows about them. Karl desperately needs outside intervention. Get moving. An to viewer disputes super Label the title of an super station is a Misnomer. The word super should be dropped. This is the same station that chose to bring us such wonderful programs As artificial wrestling Knight rider Etc. And a 30-minute talk show during the Winter olym pics when the olympics which Are real people not doing fake things could have been shown instead. Now the 1988 summer olympics Are coming and suppose we can expect More of the same fake unreal impossible Bullet ducking programs. Even these intelligence insulting programs will be re runs because of the writers strike. Why can t we at least get tape delayed programs of the olympics themselves i d never admit it if i were a member of the of programming staff and still tried to convince people it is a super station. When we Are not serving particular viewer s needs we Are still serving the needs of Many other viewers. Don t take kids to inappropriate films to All the movie critics wonder Why their children act the Way they do. I m tired of Reading and hearing Many times Over inthe stars and stripes and an about parents and upper military commanders disapproval of some of the movies that Are being shown in our family Heaters. As always the no. 1 complaint is that our or my Chil Dren should not be subjected to this Type of violence horror or sexually orientated movie. Well i agree. In fact recently i viewed the what did i see the same thing i saw at All the other movies such As platoon "untouchables,""9 /2 weeks fatal attraction children. Their Ages ranged from babies to 10-year-Olds. Of course they were accompanied by their parents. These Are the parents who usually do All the complaining and Wonde if Youdon t feel that children should be subjected to that movie then Why did you take them you can t say that you did t know what the movie was about because All cafes movie schedules give some sort of background of the movie As does the stars and stripes. You can t say Well we could t find a baby i say that s inexcusable since there Are plenty of students in our communities especially that school is out. They need the extra Money and plus it gives them some , the Way i see it maybe it s not the children that you should worry about it May just be Plain old you.
