European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 12, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Arts Lati Stefi Friday August 12, 1988 the stars and stripes Page 11 letter dear Ann Landers my husband s sister i la Call her Monica had her first child a month ago. She advertised the fact that they had been trying for five years. Nobody s business when she gave birth to a nine Pound boy everyone was Happy for them. Last night we went to their Home for a Light supper and a look at the baby. Several family members were there. It was a Nice congenial group. After supper Monica s husband asked if we would like to see the video he had taken in the Hospital. We All said yes thinking they would be pictures of the baby in tile Nursery behind the Glass going Home the usual stuff. I almost passed out when we were shown pictures of Monica in the delivery room with masked and gowned nurses and the obstetrician hard at work. Monica s feet were in the stirrups and although she was draped the camera was positioned so that we were Given a head on frontal View of everything. Suddenly there was a lot of blood. The doctor had to do some cutting then the baby popped out. When the nurse washed off the afterbirth i almost lost my supper. Two of Monica s Brothers nearly fainted. My father in Law left the room. I wanted to go through the floor. Monica s husband was proud of his documentary and she was thrilled with it. The other relatives seemed to be in a state of Shock. My husband thought it was terrific and said i want to do the same thing when we have a i told him Over my dead what about it Ann am i crazy to be appalled by this sort of video being shown to the family your comments Are wanted. New York new York dear . Monica s husband should have been More explicit about the Content of the video. Not everyone wants to see films of that nature. I would give them Low Marks for judgment and Zero for taste. Dear readers i hate to sound like a broken record but Here Are some facts from Usa today that Are Well Worth noting. That Beautiful Tan could Cost you your life. The Inci Dence of Melanoma the most serious form of skin can cer has jumped 93 percent since 1980. Or. Perry Rob bins president of the skin cancer foundation in new York says the bad news usually shows up 20 years later. Women Are twice As susceptible As men. Tanning Booths can be deadly. They deliver four times As much ultraviolet radiation As the Sun. In 10 years Well know How dangerous that is and it will be too late for a lot of bronzed beauties and Adonise. If you love that Sun kissed look dear one please buy it in a bottle. Dear Ann Landers i d like to share my solution to the problem of in considerate people who drop in to visit late at night after the lights Are out. When we were first married we both worked at jobs that required us to get up very Early in the morning. My husband s Cousin a clod who worked a night shift often dropped in after Midnight even though the House was pitch Black and it was obvious that we had turned in. One night at 12 30 de woke us up to return a Hammer he had borrowed. He finally left at 2 . My husband was livid and decided to teach him a lesson. He called de at 5 . To thank him for returning the Hammer. That was the last time he dropped in on us. Silverton Ore. I to Silver a neat idea with endless possibilities. Thanks for passing it along. Rehab program promotion bar explained i often wonder what Good one letter might do but the time has come for me to speak up about a program that is vital to Many military personnel and their de Pendents the drug and alcohol rehabilitation Gram. I am enrolled in track Iii in my area. My program consists of six weeks of in patient care at Lan Stuhl army regional Hospital which i completed in de Cember and a one year follow up in my Community. Before my six weeks i was so dependent on alcohol that i could not go a Day without it. My life was going nowhere. But through hard work excellent Counselor and a desire to get Well again i now have a brighter future a better environment and i m healthier than i Ever was in 13 years of drinking. I now have seven months of sobriety and i m thankful for each Day. I am very thankful the services saw the importance of a treatment program that has saved myself and others from a living hell. But something very important has come up that needs to be addressed. The Issue affects Ever service member in the program promotions. My drinking never caused me any military problems and i never had an article 15 or lost any rank. Many others Are less fortunate. Word has come Down that those personnel on track Iii will not be considered for promotion while on the program. Those e-4s and e-5s already on the list prior to their program can be promoted. My concern is that the army could lose some Good soldiers who Are working hard to make up for lost ground while continuing with the Day to Day experiences of life without alcohol. At limes it s hard but we drive on. To basically punish us with no promotions solely because of a treatment program i feel undermines the purpose of the program. Yes sobriety for me is number one before All else i must be sober. But the attitude comes up and i saw it today Why should i work hard if i might have to sit at this rank another year or i m not talking of those on lists but the Els through e-4s. I accept that i am an alcoholic but i try to fit in at my Job arid work for the same goals As the next Guy and still not forget what sobriety Means to me. Are you saying that because i am an alcoholic i am not suited for promotion do you know that i will still be an alcoholic after i Complete the program do you know that there is no cure and i will always be an alcoholic goals Are important to us All. For me promotions Are goals. Don t take away my goal simply because i have recognized my probe in and now work to change my life. I be seen first hand what promotions do for soldiers after they come out of the program. If i had known that i could t be promoted while in track i might have continued to slide by remain sick but possibly get that next rank. Scary but True. I feel the program helped save my life. I could never say enough Good about it. I Hope that before the final word is said that this regulation will be looked at again. Come to the hospitals. Ask the e-2 How much he would like his e-3 Back or the e-6 who was taken Down to e-5. We Are the ones fighting in the trenches. The army is trying to help us and pull us out of the alcohol ruts. Don t slap us at the same time. Please take the time to listen. Name and location withheld editor s note maj. . Pfisterer office of the Deputy chief of staff personnel he Usa eur replies it is Long standing army policy that soldiers who Are not fully qualified for re enlistment Are non promo table. Soldiers currently enrolled in the alcohol and drug abuse prevention and control program and App Are not allowed to re enlist until the question of rehabilitation and subsequent retention is settled those soldiers Are not eligible for immediate re enlist ment but May extend to Complete rehabilitation. Soldiers who Complete and App rehabilitation immediately regain re enlistment and promotion eligibility. Those soldiers that do not successfully Complete rehabilitation Are processed for separation. Individuals whose promotion from a standing list was delayed because of and App enrolment May have their Date of rank and effective Date adjusted to the Date promotion would have occurred without enrolment in the and App. These policies apply to All soldiers in the and App regardless of enrolment track. Because of the severity of their dependence on Alco hol or other drugs individuals in track i Are enrolled for a full year to increase the probability of Success Ful rehabilitation and retention. Soldiers considered by their commanders to have the potential for continued service will be offered the Opportunity for rehabilitation. It is a Mark of your commander s Faith in your future potential and Possi ble promotion that you were offered rehabilitation.
