European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 12, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday August 12,1988 the stars and stripes Page 25 outdoor adventures there s More to Hunting than guns its interesting to note that Hunting often requires use of some unusual material. Hunters sometimes find their favorite pastime involves More than guns cleaning solvent and old clothes. How about Popsicle Sticks Wood glue clo Rox and Hydrogen peroxide do Hunters need such things Well maybe if they get involved in preparing trophies for display on that special Wall for Hunt ing memories. I be had a lot of help and advice in trophy Prepa ration and i always enjoy sharing ideas and methods with fellow Hunters. I Learned of a special bleaching solution a few years ago from a German Friend. It s Good for bleaching the Skull parts of Deer and Cha Mois Antlers. The ingredients Are Chalk powder and Hydrogen peroxide. Here s How you do it. After boiling the Skull and scraping off All the fat and flesh put a cup of the powder in a Glass bowl or Jar. Slowly stir in the Hydrogen peroxide until you have a thick gooey solution about the consistency of shaving Cream. Then using a Popsicle stick spread a thick layer of the concoction Over All of the Skull parts including the inside cavity. Let it set for a Day on newspaper or other disposable material. This is a potent solution that will bleach just about everything it touches including your skin. Be sure to avoid Contact with the trophy Antlers table tops or your hands. If there s any left Over do not cover or Seal it in a Container. Leave it open and exposed to the air because it could explode if sealed. Allow the excess to dry and then Wash it away with cold water. After a Day Wash the the trophy Skull thoroughly with cold water removing the solution and allow to dry. This leaves the Bone White smooth and ready for mounting. The Hydrogen peroxide should be stronger than that used for Normal household requirements. I recommend obtaining both the Chalk powder and per oxide from a european store. Most drug stores in Germany carry both or you can try a pharmacy. If the store does t Stock the products it probably will order them for you. German Hunting stores have some bleaching products. I m sure they work but they Cost More than powder and peroxide. I be used this technique for several years but there Are other Good methods. Another procedure involves boiling the Skull in Clorox and water. This bleaches the Bones but tends to leave the surface somewhat rough and Chalky. I be tried this method but i Don t use it anymore. Some Hunters have Good Luck using cheese cloth and Clorox. The cloth is soaked in Clorox and wrap Ped around the Bone. After a few hours the Skull is Well bleached. I be never tried this but it should work. One of the oldest methods is to Lay the Skull in the grass and let the Sun do the bleaching. The old timers consider this the most natural Way. I think they re right but it takes considerable time and the bleaching May be uneven. Some areas under the ant lers will not always get enough sunlight. Sometimes the Bones near the nose May break off regardless of the bleaching method used. That s where penal comes in. This is a special Wood glue available i German hardware stores. Apply it to the break and put a g9od portion throughout the under Side of the Bone in the nose cavity. It works great and the glue matches the color of the Bone.
