European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 20, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Dear Ann Landers in 1981 i had breast cancer. Iwas 36 years old. My Mother had died 32 years earlier at age 36, of breast cancer. I got through it. In 19831 had a second Mastectomy and Learned that my Hus band was having a midlife crisis Type of affair. I got through it. In 1986 our Beautiful bright18-year-old son took his life. No warning. No sign that he was unhappy. My husband and i were at Home when he quietly hanged himself in the basement. God knows How i got through it but i did. In 1988, after 21 years of what i thought was a goo marriage my husband moved in with his Friday Nile because of All the hell we had Bee through together i was certain that nothing could break us apart. When he left me the pain was gut wrenching but i got through it. How have i overcome All the grief in my life it was due to the help i g9t from a competent and caring therapist and the Loving support of family and All it was believing in god and having Faith in myself. If i could go from a living hell to peace and serenity anyone can. There is nothing special about me. I just asked god for the strength to get through the Day. Idin t ask him to get me through the week because i never knew what i would need two Days up the Road. I asked Only that he give me strength to get through the Day. And he never failed me. Answered prayers in Gary dear Friend in Gary you have written a powerful letter filled with humility and Good sense. You Are to be admired for your Faith and your courage. One of the great strengths of this column is not whammy readers learn from me but what they learn from one another. I be always known there is a wealth of Wisdom out there. Thank you for proving it. Dear Ann Landers will you please Tell me if the american red crossbill inform a donor if it is discovered that he or she has aids an . In . We checked with or. Gerald Sander at red Cros Headquarters in Washington. He said All donors who test positive for the aids antibodies Are notified. These findings Are kept strictly confidential. However or. Sander advises those whose behaviour might place them at risk to refrain from donating blood because current tests Are not 100 percent accurate and their blood could contaminate the Supply. Dear Ann Landers you made a glaring error in a recent column. You told a distressed Reader All psychiatrists Are . this is wrong. Many psychiatrists have . Are doctors of osteopathy. The training and in Many cases their specially certification credentials Are the same As those for psychiatrists with the . Degree. Osteopathic physicians Are licensed to practice a full scope of Medicine in All 50states. I Trust you will publish a correction soon. Gerald g. Osborn . I wish to comment briefly describe thu Zweig Rick in Community s us Caz Recycle program discuss some potential benefits and pose several questions. The writer makes important observations recycling can and does work . Citizens Are Seldom As concerned about re using material As German citizens and benefits can accrue from Recy Ling. These statements accurately reflect reality. There is a current 160,000 Mark defer be Reut Iliza Tion and marketing office demo contract for Sale of mostly cardboard from nine commissaries in one demo Region. The troop support Agency runs 36 commissaries from its us Caz office. Readers can estimate benefits to commissary shoppers of Selling cardboard from All commissaries. Benefits from card Board sales should change existing attitudes of Recy cling value. There also is the Benefit of Cost avoided by not disposing of it As garbage. To realize recycling benefits military communities must convince their members recycling is worthwhile and then get them to segregate and dispose of their garbage so it is an asset not a liability this As the responder Points out is a very real and substantial problem. It is a major impediment to a a Scaz s re Cycle program developing into a during october 88 Energy awareness week we began expansion of us Caz s Recycle program to include More than collection and Sale of cardboard and computer paper. This was a cooperative Effort of the environmental and Energy officers. We had been searching for a program that would afford each Community member opportunities for frequent daily participation and also serve As a constant reminder of the army s Energy program. A Recycle program does jus that. A comprehensive Recycle program will Only work All bases have translators. Duce refuse volume and disposal Cost by $200,000 a year. If the rest of 21st made similar proportionate reductions savings could be $4,000,000. By Extension Usa eur savings could be $20,000,000. These estimates accurately represent potential reve nue Worth pursuing. I Hope we will Bank them first. I wonder Why Usa eur army Dod and the entire . Government Are not pushing recycling which is environmentally sound politically attractive avoids use of enormous quantities of Energy and can return substantial profit with very Little investment. The us Caz Apo receives about 10 tons of mail per week mostly paper eventually becoming garbage. It would be interesting to know How Many tons of . Mail enters the Apos in Usa eur weekly. Each ton recycled Here saves the local Economy 2,000 Kwh of electricity. Savings for aluminium is 12,500 Kwh ton. Bill Burch Wei Frikken West Germany i m writing in regards to the letters i be seen concerning recycling in Germany. I know first hand about this because i work directly with the German govern ment on a refuse disposal contract at my base. This is especially aimed at a recent response saying recycling is not Cost effective. Germans already have the recycling programs. We re not asking the Ameri cans to Start their own recycling but to Only use what s already available. Germany has an excellent recycling program. They Don t keep it a secret either it s there to use. Every year they create an updated brochure entitled Abfall und alts off info 198x von this brochure de fines every Type of refuse there is and How to dispose of it. The last few pages have dates and towns for special refuse pick . Even though translation is needed this should not be the reason americans Don t use it. With participation of a Large fraction of a Community population and for More than a marginally successful program each participant must make frequent Small contributions. Our program s Success will be based on frequent Small contributions of a Large number of Community members. The commanding general Deputy Community com Mander and director of engineering and housing have Given our program unqualified support an element essential to Success. With the help of local girl cub and boy scouts other organizations and Many individuals we intend to have a profitable program which returns Money to the Community for Quality of life enhancement projects. Our primary problem is containers enough to make deposition of segregated material easy. As yet we do not know How we Only know the problem must resolved. Examples of Revenue from recycling a a the local commissary annually Sel about 17 tons of aluminium cans to of $20,000 cafes not included the num sold in Usa eur is enormous. Us Caz represents about 5 p Talcom. Our fiscal year 1988 Refus s soft drinks in entail Revenue Alue of alumni recent of 21st disposal co twas about $360,000. A Recycle program goal is to re pen pals Many americans Aren t aware of All these special Cost free pick for Glass old paper old medicines batteries old clothes Etc. Germany does this because it s the environmental Law. Through our base s suggestion program two Ger Man nationals suggested acquiring Glass and paper dumpsters and to locate them throughout the base. Americans use them every other week they get Emp tied. Our commissary has a contract with a paper Recy cling Plant which pays the commissary for its boxes and transports the boxes to their Plant. Recently our base received the problems Muell pick up which is a special Cost free refuse pick up for hazardous wastes found in households. Believe me americans Are ignorant concerning re fuse disposal in Germany but it s not their fault. Whether or not upper management wants the base populace to know about Germany s disposal is the main cause of this problem. In my Pursuit to inform people of these regulations i have heard responses such As it s always been this Way or it s not my Job and americans will never separate their refuse. But my base is listening and things Are getting done. Vanessa Bradt Hahn a West Germany please list me in your pen pal column. I am 9 years old.
