European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 25, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday january 25, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 25 m racing Roundup the 1989 formula one world driving championship with 16 grand prix races on the schedule gets under Way in Rio de Janeiro on March 26 wit the running of the grand prix of Brazil. With the Turbo engines now history in formula one racing everyone is looking Forward to a far More competitive season than last years when the Mclaren Honda Turbo cars won 15 out of 16 races but if the results of last month s formula one test ing sessions on the Jerez circuit in Spain can be used As a guide the 1989 Campaign could Well be a repeat of 1988. The Only difference would be a Mclaren Honda sweep with normally aspirated engines in Stead of turbos. Even before the Jerez testing it was obvious that the new Mclaren Honda v10 car was extremely Quick. In private testing at Imola Italy during octo ber Mclaren Drivers Ayrton Senna of Brazil and Alain Prost of France were both extremely fast with Senna turning a time that would have been third fastest for last year s san Marino grand prix which is run on the Imola circuit. Honda had five of the new vi0 engines at the Imola testing session three of the engines of differ ent specifications. So the Honda engineers Are Al ready on top with their research and development. But Back to Jerez where Goodyear sup plied a variety of tires for the five Days of testing the Drivers All testing tires As Well As their cars and engines. Goodyear brought some 1,100 tires including 300 of different compounds and construction plus qualifiers. As the Pirelli tire company will also sup ply tires this season qualifying tires will again be necessary. Running at Jerez were Mclaren Ferrari March Benetton Williams and Zak Speed with Only Lotus arrows and Tyrrell missing where top teams Are concerned. Senna the defending world Champion was on hol iday so his place at Mclaren Honda was taken by Ace test Driver Emanuele Pirro of Italy who does All of the private testing for Mclaren Honda in Japan. The Frenchman Prost who was runner up to Senna last year joined Pirro at Jerez. And it was Prost As you might expect who re corded fastest time after the full five Days of testing with a Lap of one minute 22.39 seconds. You can probably guess who turned second fastest time. It was Pirro of course at 1 23.47, exactly 1.08 seconds off Prost s Pace. Third fastest was Mauricio Gugel min of Brazil in a March Judd 1 23.74fourth came the italian Driver Alessandro Nannini in a Ben Etton Ford 1 23.92and fifth fastest was Gerhard Berger of Austria at 1 24,10 in the new Ferrari withv12 engine Power. 9 for comparison purposes Senna had the pole at least year s Spanish grand prix at Jerez with a time of 1 24.067 and this of course was set in a Turbo powered Mclaren. So Prost with a normally aspirated v10 Honda engine was 1.67 seconds under Senna s pole position time of last year. Pirro Gugelman and Nannini were also under Senna s pole time for that matter. So these normally aspirated powered cars Are Quick indeed. N 1989? Randy Barnett but it s obvious that Mclaren Honda cars Are Al ready far the quickest and the final version of the new formula one Mclaren is yet to come. Only the interim Model was used at Jerez. So the Mclaren Honda opposition can look Forward to another hard year. Ferrari meanwhile in testing at both Jerez and in a More recent Outing at Paul Ricard circuit in South Ern France is already having problems extracting enough Power from its vi2 engine. No one wants to see a repeat of the 1988 Mclaren steamroller because Competition Between teams i vital in racing. But at this stage certainly the steam roller appears All set to again flatten everything in its path. And while we re at it Well pick Prost to win his third world championship. It will be a close run be tween Prost and his teammate Senna but we have Hunch that Prost will come through. The . Grand prix now re instated on the Calendar and scheduled for june 4, As noted previously in this column is still without a definite site. Both Road Atlanta and the Laguna Seca circuit near Monterey calif., have been mentioned As possible hosts for the . Round and now comes a third entry Phoenix Ariz. It is proposed that the race be run on the streets of downtown Phoenix and while this would be Fine in january or february anyone who has been around Phoenix during the month of june would veto the idea. It is simply too hot blast Furnace heat fro the desert. Still a committee has drawn up a proposed five year contract with a businessman who Hopes to bring formula one racing to Phoenix this june and decision is due shortly. In other . Racing developments Alfa Romeo has announced its entry into cart indy car racing and has signed Colombia s Roberto Guerrero to do the driving. March will Supply the Chassis As it does now to porsche and Power will come from an Alfa Romeo 2.6 5-liter Turbo v8 engine that is derived from Ferrari.
