Neither John Thompson nor Lou Carnesecca not exactly Young or naive customers knew what the consequences would be for their ejected Power forwards. Nor had their players been schooled on the rules regarding fights. When told by reporters that Turner would be suspended for Georgetown s next big East game against no. 9 Seton Hall next wednesday Thomp son said i Don t think that s True. I think it has to be two offences for fighting. I m not sure i la have to chock " Carnesecca also seemed confused when in formed of Williams one game suspension for the redmen s saturday visit to Connecticut even though Williams met the same Fate after he threw a punch and a chair in Providence r.i., last sea son. He was suspended from the redmen s first round game of the big East tournament. So let s review the applicable fighting policies note the plural for College basketball. Big East policy states that a player ejected from a league game for fighting faces an automatic one game suspension from the next conference game. Each additional fighting ejection draws the same one game suspension with no stiffer penalty for cumulative offences. This 1 year old big East Rule instituted after a Pitt Georgetown Brawl last january applies to league games Only. The National collegiate athletic association has a newer Rule instituted this season. The Parent organization is softer on first time offenders than the big East. One ejection for fighting under Mcaa rules draws probation not suspension. Two fights by the same player in the same season brings a one game suspension. But fight no. 3 is strike no. 3 suspension for the remainder of the season. According to commissioner Dave Gavitt the big East Rule supersedes the Mcaa Rule Only when it comes to first time offenders then the Mcaa Rule takes is opposed to the Mcaa Rule because he fears it will be unevenly applied from coast to coast and conference to con f 6 Ronco regardless of the merits of either Rule Thomp son and Carnesecca should have made them selves and their players aware of them Long be fore monday night both Williams and Turner expressed remorse and regret Over their scuffle. If i could i would like to take it Back Turner said. I really forgot All about the Rule about fight inn ing. So it seems did the coaches. Hoyas freshman Alonzo mourning and Connecticut s Cliff Robinson nearly got into a scrap saturday. Battling for a rebound they squared off but kept their fists to themselves. Thompson pulled mourning from the game. He s a freshman and i wanted to Settle him Down. I knew that Robinson was too experienced. He s roofing and Alonzo May be getting angry so it s Best to pull him on out and Calm him Down. Thompson knew where Robinson was coming from. It s like the new Guy coming on the turf you be got to touch him a Little bit and let him know Welcome to the big East " three Point percentage cd g3fg3fgapct.
