A Ken Schrader and Terry Labonte were the winners thursday in a pair of very Dif Ferent 125-mile qualifying races for Sun Day s Daytona 500. Schrader was Able to escape a chaotic 18-car tangle in the opener leading 42 of 50 laps while Labonte won a strategic game of fuel management and set a Speed record in the second race. Labonte whose team switched from Chevrolet to Ford this season took the Lead with six laps left in his qualifier when leaders Dale Earnhardt and Geoff Bodine pitied hurriedly for a splash of Gas. Labonte s Junior Johnson prepared thunderbird stayed on the track. The last couple of laps the fuel pres sure started falling off Labonte said. The engine started missing coming of turn four for the checker Flag. I was out of Gas at the finish line. You could do that at the end of the race but not during the running of the race because anytime you run that Low on Gas you take a Chance of burning  Sterling Marlin who also stayed off pit Road ran out of Gas just a bit earlier than Labonte and coasted across the Fin ish line a Distant 9.21 seconds behind the Winner. There were no caution flags in the Sec Ond race and Labonte s average Speed of 189.554 Mph broke the qualifying race record of 183.295 set in 1970 by Cale Yarborough. We really ran Good from the Start and i think we re going to be awfully Good on sunday Labonte said. Earnhardt wound up third and Bodine fourth followed by Harry Gant Larry Pearson Davey Allison and pole starter Darrell Waltrip. Schrader led from Lap 22 to the end beating Morgan Shepherd to the finish line by about two tenths of a second. That s the same engine we be been using right along Schrader said. I m Gonna try to talk them into keeping it in the car for sunday. It s a pretty Good  Schrader s average Speed of 147.203 Mph was held Down by two caution Peri ods for seven laps and a red Flag after the big Accident. Mcduffie f Mickey Gibbs Connie Saylor Ronnie Sanders and Mark Gibson. Several hit the Wall or other cars and most spun into the infield grass near turn one but no injuries were reported. Darryl Prue had 13 Points and Chris Brooks added 11 for the mountaineers who Are 21-2 Overall and improved their Atlantic 10 record to a league leading 14-0. Massachusetts dropped to 9-14 and 4-10 As West Virginia won its 11th in a Row Over the minutemen. Massachusetts Jim Mccoy led All scorers with 23 Points and John tale added 10. No. 18 Nevada Las vegas 95, san Jose St. 66 san Jose Calif. David Butler scored 20 Points and Barry Young added a career High 19 As no. 18 Nevada Las vegas overcame a sluggish Start to rout san Jose state the spartans 12th straight loss. The Runnin rebels used a 16-2 burst late in the first half to break open a close game and improve to 17-6 Overall and 11-2 atop the big West conference. James Jones contributed a career High 16 Points an seven rebounds. Last place san Jose playing its seventh game since 10 players quit the team Jan. 18, got a career High 23 Points and 12 rebounds from walk on Johnny John son. The spartans fell to 5-18 and 1-13 and Are two defeats away from tying the school record. No. 13 Michigan 84, Purdue 70ann Arbor Mich. Dennis Rodman led Detroit with 15 rebounds while Isiah Thomas had 14 assists. Sacramento was led by de Pinckney with 16 Point and Kenny Smith with 15. Lakers 110, Trail blazers 101 Portland Ore. James worthy scored 28 Points and . Green added 23 As the los Angeles lakers playing without magic Johnson beat Portland. Jazz 129, celtics 114 Salt Lake City Karl Malone scored 36 Points 23 in the second half As the jazz ran away from Boston snapping the celtics four game winning Streak against Utah. The jazz led 64-48 at halftime and Malone helped Utah stay in front in the second half. John Stockton added 22 Points and 16 assists for Utah while Thurl Bailey came off the Bench to score 21. The celtics who have lost the first two games of their six game Road trip Are 21-21 without Larry Bird who s been sidelined with Bone spurs on both Heel since nov. 19. Kevin Mchale scored 26 Points and Danny ainge25 for Boston. Mavericks 93, heat 80dallas James Donaldson pulled Down 22 re Bounds while scoring 16 Points As Dallas won its firs game following the Trade of All time leading scorer Mark Aguirre Downing  was dealt to the Detroit pistons on wednes Day for Adrian Dantley. Dantley is scheduled to report to Dallas Friday afternoon. Warriors 143, clippers 138, Kotlos Angeles Rookie Mitch Richmond scored 27 Points including six free throws in the final 41seconds of overtime As Golden state outlasted the los Angeles  Mullin scored 29 Points and Terry Teagle added 23 for the warriors
