European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 18, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday february 18, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 5 gop fights Klansman turned Republic com new Orleans a the Republican part rolled out its big guns thursday president Bush and former president Reagan to keep a former Kun Klu klan Leader from being elected to the state legislature As a member of the gop. Letters touting Bush s endorsement of sex Klansman David Duke s opponent in the state House race were circulated throughout the District while radio commercials featuring Reagan s familiar voice were Broad cast throughout the Day. I can t help but Tell you of the High regard i have for one candidate in the race for the 81st District John Treen Reagan said in the radio spot for the House builder and longtime Republican. Duke 38, countered with a paid 30-minute television broadcast in which he declared that neither Bush nor Reagan knows anything about the issues in the local race. George Bush has t walked in the Irish italian Parade As i have Down Metairie Road. George Bush has t eaten at the lakefront in Bucktown Duke said. I know the people of the District not George Bush or Ronald Reagan. I respect both of those men but All i can respond is. Read my lips George Bush no new taxes and David Duke basically has the same kind of program that George Bush has Treen 63, and Duke a firmer grand wizard of Sheku flux klan Are in a Runoff saturday to represent the nearly All White District Iii Metairie a new Orleans suburb. Duke who sought the 1988 democratic presidential nomination but registered Republican in the fall led a Field of seven candidates with 33 percent of the vote in theban. 21 primary. Treen had 19 percent. Under Louisiana s open primary system the top two vote getters in a Pri Mary regardless of party face each other in the run off if no candidate gets half the primary votes. The sea opened when Metairie s representative was elected to a judgeship. The presidential level Duke endorsements for a state House seat May have unprecedented. This is the first time for sure that Ronald Reagan has Ever done it to my knowledge for a state legislative race said state Republican party chairman Willia Nungesser. Bush and Reagan did t mention Duke in their endorsements but state and National Republican officials made it Clear that a Duke Victory would harm the party. It s As if Attila the Hun joined our party Sai Nungesser. All of a sudden Attila the Hun is a Republican candidate. I Don t believe he s changed one he is not a Republican and should not pass himself off to be a Republican said Leslie Goodman spokeswoman for the Republican National committee in Washington. We can tolerate a lot in this party but the one thing we cannot tolerate is it has to be political favors being called in Duke said after Treen received the presidential endorse ments. I m really tired of this. The outside interference in this race is absolutely ridiculous. It s like the establishment is closing the ranks to prevent an inde pendent from coming Duke has been campaigning door to door this weeks publicity heated up in the race. Treen said he received the endorsement from Rea Gan after a Mutual Friend whom he would not identify asked the former president to get involved. Treen was state Campaign chairman for Bush s 1980presidential bid. His brother Dave was Louisiana governor from 1980 to 1984. The commercials were paid for by Treen s Campaign. Neither Treen nor Nungesser would say How much they Cost. Duke has disavowed the klan which he said he Leftin 1980 after being accused of Selling secret membership Rolls. He Heads a group called the National association for the advancement of White people which he says is not racist but a group seeking human rights for everybody. He is opposed to welfare and affirmative action an supports Louisiana s $75,000 Homestead tax exemption.
