European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 22, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday february 22,1989 the stars and stripes Page 25 racing Roundup testing Senna fast As Ferrari foils in december several formula one teams participated in testing sessions on the grand prix circuit at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain and to no one s Surprise the Mclaren Honda cars were fastest Befar. Last week another seven Day testing session took place on the Jerez track and it was a Case of no Brazil s a tron Senna the defending world driving Champion established an unofficial record in his non Turbo Mclaren Honda v10 with a time of one minute 21.1 seconds this Mark nearly three seconds under his pole position time at the Spanish grand prix in Jerez last year. And remember that Senna was driving a Turbo charged Mclaren Honda at that time. So with his normally aspirated Honda v10 engine another newly developed one he is much faster than he was with the Turbo. This hardly seems possible yet there it is. Barring a Miracle the Mclaren Honda team looks Good for another world championship and is certainly All set for the opening grand prix at Brazilon March 26. In the Jerez testing the March team was Best of the also rans with Mauricio Gugelman of Brazil 1.1 seconds off Senna s Pace and Ivan Capelli 1.7 seconds Back. Both March cars Are powered by Judd engines. Along with formula one engines the Brit ish Judd firm has developed engines for the Ameri can cart series with the Early Indianapolis 500 entry list showing several Lola Judd entries. Sharing fourth fastest time at Jerez was Senna s Mclaren teammate Alain Prost of France with 1 23 Flat while another 1 23 was recorded by the italian Driver ales Sandro Nannini in a Benetton Ford. Williams Ren Ault cars were sixth and seventh the new automatic transmission ferraris were eighth and ninth and another Benetton Ford was 1 oth. The Ferrari Story is a sad one at the moment with the Brand new Ferrari 640 car having endless problems at Jerez. Neither Britain s Nigel Mansell nor his austrian teammate Gerhard Berger turned in competitive times and Ferrari packed up and went Home two Days before the test session ended. During the december session at Jerez Ferrari used the interim 639 Model with the 7-Speed Auto Matic transmission and Berger managed a fifth fast est time with that car. Last week the new 640 made its official debut in Italy then was flown to Spain for its track debut at Jerez. The debut was anything but an illustrious one with mechanical problems As noted limiting the Ferrari Outing in Spain. Because of so Little time spent on the track the car s performance results were inconclusive but As of now it appears that Ferrari is not about to Chal Randy Barnett Lenge Mclaren with the automatic Italy s Michele Albreto who has returned to the British Tyrrell team for the 1989 season after being released by Ferrari was quoted in the British press recently As saying i am not a technician but i have seen Many racing cars in my time and i think this the 640 Ferrari is a bad car. That gear change sys tem is just a bad idea which in t going to offer any advantage. It s just too Complex and heavy. There is no advantage with this system in my View. I am extremely Happy that i won t be driving it and to be honest i feel very sorry for Nigel but the austrian Berger who managed to get in the most laps with the new 640, told report ers in Jerez that the car feels very comfortable and it reacts Well. We still have a lot of problems with it Basic electronic problems but it s a Good thing forthe Ferrari s Berger said it is the Model for future race cars and predicted other manufacturers will switch to automatic transmissions within the next two years. Here we would say Berger could be right but Only if Ferrari wins with this Type of transmission. And at the moment there appears Little Hope for that. In theory Ferrari s seven Speed automatic trans Mission should make it quicker to change gears and save time during a race. Rather than clutch and shift gears the Driver simply flicks a lever located behind the steering wheel. While this sounds Fine in theory the question is will it work with the automatic system an electronic Hydraulic one More parts can fail and failure at a critical moment or in a High Speed turn cannot be discounted. This will not add to a Driver s peace of mind. And with the automatic system Only one gear at a time can be changed. With a clutch system the Driver can skip gears on a downshift through Brak ing. Formula one racing is supposed to be a show Case of technology although if that were truly the Case Turbo engines would still be used in grand prix racing. Regardless Ferrari deserves credit for trying something new but in its attempt to Challenge Mclaren Honda this automatic transmission Effort looks More like an act of desperation. Scotland s Jackie Stewart who retired from racing in 1973 after winning three world championships will act As the Mastermind of his son s new International formula 3 team Paul the tobacco firm . Reynolds which sponsored Paul Stewart in formula 2000 racing last season announced in a press release that it will support the new formula 3 team for 1989. The Drivers Are Paul Stewart and Germany s Otto Rensing who was run Nerup to Joachim Winkelhoch in the German for Mula 3 championship last year. Rensing will be the new team s no. 1 Driver. Commenting on his son s plans Jackie Stewart said that after formula 3 racing we look towards formula 3000, perhaps by 1991. There Are Only a handful of Long term thinkers in motor sport particularly at this level but we Don t intend to be Here today and gone in the motorcycle world Kenny Rob erts says that his team Lucky strike Roberts is ready for an All out championship attack in 1989. California rider Wayne Rainey and the australian Kevin Magee both of whom Rode for Roberts last year Are returning and Roberts says that Wayne is ready to win the title in 1989. Our Job is to make sure he has the machine combination to do Rainey and Magee will ride the latest version of the Yamaha yzr500 v4 bikes in the top Soock class bikes that Roberts terms the most user Friendly of modern grand prix the californian Roberts who won three straight world titles in the Soock class has again signed John Kocinski of Little Rock ark., who will make his Soock debut during the season As Well As going for his third straight 250cc championship in the United states. The Roberts team is entering its fourth year and this is the year that Kenny has been aiming for. He said last year that Rainey and Magee both new to the team As Well As to Soock grand prix racing would use 1988 As a preparation year for 1989 and the world championship. It s a Good team and with Roberts at the Helm either Rainey or Magee could win the title. The stars and stripes Bruno won t Stop time or Tyson . Las vegas a the twentieth Century is running out on British heavy weights. With a Little less than 11 years remain ing a British fighter has yet to win Box ing s spotlight championship in this Cen Tury. Horizontal has Long been an Apt description for British heavyweights and it s what Frank Bruno should be shortly after his fight against Mike Tyson begins saturday night at the Las vegas Hilton. The muscular Bruno reminded one British sports writer of one of the statues at Caesars Palace. Bruno might not be that fast. With what he is going through i Don t think his mind is 100 percent on the after the fight you ask Frank Bruno whether it was such a Peak time says Tyson who last week got a divorce from actress Robin Givens. The 22-year-old Champion s life also was in turmoil when he fought Michael Spinks last june 27. Lion for his second championship Chal Lenge. He was knocked out in the Lith round by a badly out of shape Tim Witherspoon in a bid for the world boxing association title on july 19, 1987, in London. I be made Money before and this Ain t about Money Bruno said. That statement recalls another British Challenge. On july 1, 1975, hungarian born Joe Bugner then a British citizen now an australian citizen fought Muhammad Ali in 108-degree heat at Kuala Bumpur Malaysia. Bugner merely went through the motions being satisfied to last the is round distance. After the fight Ali was drained by his efforts while Bugner returned to his hotel to swim and drink Champagne. British promoter Mickey Duff Dis gusted by Bugner s Lack of Effort said Well Joe i guess the name of the game is yes Mickey Joe said. And being Able to spend in 11 previous tries for the heavy weight title by British fighters Only Bugner and Tommy Farr went the Dis Tance. Farr became a British hero by losing a 15-round unanimous decision to Joe Louis on aug. 30, 1937, at Yankee stadium in new York. Ali turned Back the challenges of four brits Henry Cooper Brian London Bugner and Richard Dunn. Dunn probably was the most inept of the British challengers. The former paratrooper was knocked Down five times and stopped in the fifth round May 24, 1976, at Munich West Germany. Four of the knockdowns were delayed reaction knockdowns with a pause be tween the punch and the beginning of Dunn s trip to the Canvas. The late red Smith quoted Bill Heinz a former boxing writer As saying Dunn was waiting for his Parachute to open. Bob Fitzsimmons was the last British fighter to hold the heavyweight championship. He knocked out James j. Corbett with the legendary solar plexus punch in the 14th round on March 17, 1897, at Carson City Nev. Fitzsimmons lost the title when he was knocked out in the 11th round by James j. Jeffries on june 9, 1899, at Coney is land. He failed to regain it when he was knocked out in the eighth round by Jef Fries on july 25,1902, at san Francisco
