Each knocked off the defending champions at the Benja min Franklin sports Arena saturday to win their trophies. Heidelberg got a Brace of free throws from Alison Hough with four seconds remaining to Post a 47-46 Victory Over Wiesbaden. Frankfurt got off to a fast Start and conquered Stuttgart 72-58 to return to the Winner s Circle for the first time in 27 years. The title was Frankfurt a seventh tying the eagles with Heidelberg for the most championships in big schools Competition that dates Back to 1950. The 1962 Champi big schools tournament on ship was the third straight for the eagles but saturday s title game appearance was their first since 1979. The championship was the Heidelberg girls third in the past four years. It also was their third since girls sports was elevated to High school status in 1975. Wiesbaden was seeking its fifth title but had to Settle for its fifth second place trophy instead. Frankfurt boys 72, Stuttgart 58 Mike Kinder threw in nine Points in the first Quarter As Frankfurt jumped off to a 21-14 Lead and was never caught. The eagles controlled both boards most of the time although Mitchell Lester was slightly difficult to tame. He did most of the scoring in the e first half and then came through with four big baskets in the third Quarter As Stuttgart Cut its 10-Pomt halftime deficit Down to four Points. However Frankfurt scored seven of the first nine Points in the final session to pull away to Victory. We jumped off to that Early Lead and were Able to apply pressure to them most of the time Frankfurt coach Bill Snyder said. Mike Kinder has been 9ur big gun most of the season and he came through in Fine fashion again tonight not Only in scoring but in All the other aspects of the game. He defended Well handled their press Well just did it All. Kinder finished with 23 Points to Lead a four pronged double figure Frankfurt scoring Parade. Mike Smith followed with 12, Amos Richardson chipped in with 11 and Dan Hallgrimson finished with 10. Hall Grimson canned four straight free throws Early in the fourth Quarter to keep the pressure on the stallions. Lester paced Stuttgart with 21 Points and Mike Davidson came through with 15. Kinder was voted the tournament s m9$t valuable player. Teammates Smith and Marcus Shipley Lester and his Stuttgart teammate Ron Thomas Wiesbaden s Rob Harris and Mannheim s Chris Nolan were named to the All tournament team along with Kinder. Heidelberg girls 47, Wiesbaden 46 Heidelberg almost did t dethrone Wiesbaden. Hough s free throws came Only one second after i Wiesbaden s Jennifer Neal had made two of her own Wiesbaden s Christy Mcneil left goes in for a Layup in big schools title game against Heidelberg. Is Gus Schueller to apparently give the warriors their second straight  Hough was fouled by Wiesbaden s Lori Jenkins after taking the throw in following Neal s Points. The free throws capped a perfect Campaign for Rich Bennett s Lions who won their third championship in the last four years and completed Dodds Competition for the year with a 17-0  it was Hough s Points that actually clinched the game it was Kirsten Keller s super performance throughout the game that guaranteed the Lions their third championship in the last four years. Keller was a Demon off the boards hauling Down 17 rebounds and blocking seven shots. Cindy cabe also was rugged off the boards with 12 rebounds some really wicked ones in the final 90 seconds. Heidelberg led 45-43 with on cabe s Basket after the Lions had missed three straight shots and Keller and cabe had scaled the Heights to get the Ball after each , with 25 seconds remaining Hough fouled Wiesbaden Star Keri Holtham who had made six straight free throws in that exciting last  Holtham missed the first one. However sin made the second  fouled out with 19 seconds remaining hut Hough missed her free throw and Trina Lattany re bounded for  five seconds left Keller was called for a foul on the rebound of Hough s missed free throw. Cal made the two free throws setting the stage for Hough s he  was some game Bennett beamed following the Victory especially the last three quarters. Wiesbaden s a really Good club one that keeps coming at you All the time added Bennett. We were fortunate in that we had the big girls to get the Ball for us. In the Consolation games Brussels beat Hahn 29-23 to take third place in girls play while Berlin routed Brussels 79-58 to take third in the boys action. Accent girls 51, Vilseck 35 the Lions miss inside Megan Baerman finally exploded and it could t have come at a better time for accent. In the first two games of this tournament Baerman was shut Down with double teams but it did t matter because Sheila cousins and Susan Diebert picked up the scoring Slack. Saturday cousins and Diebert bolstered their out Side weapons because Baerman scored Early and often tossing in 21 Points to Lead the Lions. That s the Way our team is Baerman said. If i slacked off on offence it did t matter because i knew Small schools tourney Sheila and Susan would take it  instead Baerman took it Down Low to get the fal cons in trouble Vilseck which made it to the title game on the strength of their starting five saw its entire front line get into foul trouble in the first half trying to Stop the Lions 6-foot Center. Baerman had 13 Points in the first half As the Lions built a 21-16 halftime advantage. The Falcons Pricilla Keanaaina picked up two fouls and Kelly Cunningham and Michelle Monroe three apiece trying to put a Bear hug on Baerman s Low Post game. Baerman also teamed with Paige Larabee on the defensive end of the floor to Force Vilseck which had been patient in its first two games into poor shots. Cunningham their Best outside shooter suffered through a 1-for-13 Effort. I could t get any shots off in the Middle so i got frustrated and started shooting out of my Range. Our team is so Short what could we do Cunningham asked. Not much not with the Lions height advantage. Falcon guard Maria Armstrong the tourney map was also frustrated unable to drive the Lane at will against Baerman and Larabee like she had in the earlier games. She finished with 10 Points.
