From Page 1 Lions with the soviet Union at the time did the Bear survive who shoved it out of the plane and did he survive in its never ending quest for truth the stars and stripes put Laughton s queries to the staff at the air Force museum at Wright Patterson fab Ohio. The eight pages of response provided some of the details that should satisfy Laughton s curiosity. First of All no the Bear was no killed by its sudden release into the atmosphere. It gently drifted the nearly seven Miles to Earth in 7 minutes and 49 seconds none the worse for Wear according to the information supplied. The Experiment was part of the work being done to understand the Impact High Speed High Altitude ejection would have on a Pilot. Up to that Point Laboratory simulators had Given researchers bits and pieces of information but nothing in a lab could re Cre ate the acceleration rapid deceleration and tumbling of a real ejection from the b-58 ejection capsule. Why a Bear Well this was no Job for the cowardly lion from the Wiz Ard of of obviously. In fact the Bear s weight provided in air Force parlance a viable that Means a Bear s ratio of Organ mass to body mass is similar to that of Man s. In English it Means that whatever happened to a Bear in this test would closely resemble what would happen to a Pilot. Previous tests with rocket sleds had used chimps and bears and even men. But the sleds could t produce the same effects As the real thing. The tests went airborne in late 1961. The first four ejected a Dummy at sub sup sonic speeds. In january 1962, a Chimpanzee was ejected from a plane flying 630 Miles per hour. On feb. 28, a Man was ejected for the first time. Three weeks later the Bear took Center stage. The question was would mysterious things happen above the Speed of sound that did t happen below the magical Speed of 720 Miles per hour the Bear was ejected at the Speed of Mach 1.3. The test was considered a Success in that the accelerations were mild and the animal was uninjured. There were More tests involving a Bear but our information docs not Tell us if it was the same Bear. On the next test a Bear was dumped into the sky at a Speed of Mach 1.6. This Bear sustained some injury because of excessive pitch of the ejection capsule. The next test used a Chimp but five subsequent tests used bears. The re sults were not included in the information from the museum. It has been 27 years since the first supersonic ejection test. Given a Black Bear s life Span of 15 to 30 years it is Safe to assume that the heroic Bear has passed away. But perhaps America s other great bears Yogi Smoky gentle Ben should make room for this nameless Bear who unflinchingly the Bear was lightly pushed Forward the development of Man s victories Over flight
