Letters army explains position on aids soldiers recently the stars and stripes published a Story concerning his policy at fort Hood Texas. This Story originated As an article written by is. Laurie Garret of new Day. Unfortunately the Story was picked up by several newspapers in the United states As Well As the stars and stripes. It contains numerous errors in fact mis quotes and mis attributions and is obviously biased. I be enclosed a copy of a Story and editorial published in the april 9 Issue of the Austin Texas Ameri can statesman. We invited the editor an editorial writer and a reporter to fort Hood to speak with soldiers infected with his. They also toured a unit where his positive soldiers Are assigned and spoke with our personnel officer preventive Medicine officer and a unit com Mander. As you can Sec the impression they came away with is significantly different from the Story printed in the stars and stripes. Needless to say i am pleased that they made an Effort to set the record straight. I realize it is too much to expect a retraction or correction to the original Story. At the same time i fee lit is my obligation to make you aware that by reprint ing the new Day article the stars and stripes did a disservice to the army fort Hood the soldiers As signed to fort Hood who arc his positive and your readership. As you read the Austin american states Man article i Hope you come to the same conclusion. It. Col. Bruce s. Beats Public affairs officer fort Hood Texas editor s note the following is the editorial printed by the Austin american statesman april 9 army s aids policy enlightened last month published reports indicated that the . Army is aggregating soldiers exposed to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus in Specia Barracks including at fort land. Based on thai information the Austin american statesman editorialized against such segregation. The information however appears to have Hern incorrect. Indeed the newspaper has found that the army s policy is remarkably enlightened. Several soldiers who have tested positive for the aids virus told reporter Dick Stanley at a Ort i lot i that they consider themselves fortunate to he living in an Island of enlightenment at the combat training Post. Aids infect cd soldiers have Legal Protection finn discrimination guaranteed employment free medical care and free Axt for life. Under a policy adopted a year ago l y the depart ment of defense recruits and career Mil Tan Mem Bers arc allowed to Star on Active duty As lung As their health permits. It. Col. Greg Rixon. A spokesman for the department of the army in h Ashington. . Said preserving infected soldiers dignity and privacy arc fundamental to the new policy. The policy says for obvious reasons that virus infected Sulliers matronly he assigned to units that will hoi in overseas or participate in combat. Most of them Are assigned in administrative and clerical functions. But they arc not otherwise segregated. .11 a Ort Hood Only is of the m infected soldiers live on government property. It. Col. Lbruce heals Public affairs officer for Iii corps said the soldiers Are purposely scattered among their Peers in several Loir Racks buildings indistinguishable from others at Llie Post. Many of the other infected soldiers Are married and live in kill Cen and the surrounding area la Hen the disease incapacitated infected soldiers they Are medically retired and remain eligible for most medi Cal benefits. In sum it appears that the . Army s Altitude toward people with aids could Well serve As a Model for the rest of american government and society.
