By Nancy Randle King features Syndicate from the moment i saw her she captured my heart with her Beauty her warmth her courage. I knew then As i know now she would change my life forever. Any woman with an ounce of Romance in her soul has to respond to the poetry of these lines that open each week s episode of the lbs series Beauty and the beast. In the series first year members of the television Academy succumbed to the Power of creator Ron Koslow s Story of epic Romance by nominating the show for 12 emmy including one for Ron Perlman As Best actor in a dramatic series. He portrays Vincent a Noble Halfman half beast from the Tunnel world beneath the City. On the air Perlman s voice promises a secret knowledge of the world and All that is Best in it. But when Perlman arrives for an interview the voice is not that of an Angel from the underworld but of a Guy from Washington Heights . This is a Guy you can talk to. Q Vincent is a different kind of television hero a character of epic proportions mythical in stature. How does an Ordinary mortal prepare himself to play such a role convincingly Ron Perlman a Ron Koslow the real creator of Vincent will Tell you that Vincent s a mythical charac Ter. That a one of the first things out of his Mouth. We Are constantly in debate about some choices that i la make every once in a while that take Vincent out of the realm of mythology and bring him Down to the level of humanity too much. I walk a Tightrope. If he gets too mythical then he a not what i really want him to be a a Champion for the underdog and somebody who knows All of the human foibles All too Well. Q part of his Appeal is his vulnerability in t it a i be said from the very beginning there is a beast inside All of us. The beast is that moment when one has no Trust in oneself and experiences profound insecurity. Everyone does at some Point and it s very much a part of me. I did t know it but i d been searching for this character All my life. Q do you think Vincent is what every woman dreams of a i think that is the revelation. Vincent is what women Are looking for. Ron Koslow and i did t know when we created the character that women were going to respond to it. And i am told that they do. I mean who would have thought that a Guy with hair on his nose and lion features. Q what Quality in Vincent do women respond to a it s that presence he has for his lady love. It s very attractive and very uncommon. People have hot love affairs but those things Don t last. Even when you get married they turn into something else. But this is a hot relationship. These people Are going to maintain that spark at All costs. And i think that is Why the show is successful without the physical zing of love there s also his Renaissance Man Quality his love of poetry opera Ballet. Q and then there s the voice that incredible disarming voice. How did you develop it a it just happened. I gave my audition having read the script through Only one time. That s How strongly i responded to the character and when i auditioned i wanted them to get that first instinct of mine rather than a polished performance. That was the voice i heard. I heard a resonance from the underworld As i was Reading the script an Echo because he s in these caverns. And i heard a bit of gravel because he s a beast. I put those two things together and that was the voice that came out. I looked up at everybody and i said i m sorry about that voice i m just experimenting and executive producer Paul Witt said Quot of no please Don t and it never changed from that first moment i read it. Q Why has Beauty and the beast made such a Strong Impact a i think what makes this show work is that it appeals to <1 part of humanity that s been there from time immemorial and will be there for As Long As we breathe. It s like the Hunchback of notre Dame the same struggle of heart Over appearance. And there s the longing that these two characters feel for each other that cannot be acted out it s magnetic. There s always been a tremendous Avenue for romanticism in our society. We be gotten away from it sadly with fast cars and fast food and fast sex and fast everything else. The things that Are celebrated in Beauty and the beast Are Small and lasting. A you work in this atmosphere of lofty values for 15 hours a Day. You Haven t driven your wife crazy with a need for epic love a no just a need for epic dinner. 24 1 tripes Magazine january 18, 1990
