Having won Many Well deserved accolades As one of the finest dramatic actors of his time he s now somewhat inexplicably turning to comedy. As a Bounty Hunter tracking an embezzler in Midnight run Deniro proved a lot funnier than anyone thought he could be. He tries just As hard in s a est film we re no Angels but even his considerable talents can t come close to saving the hopelessly sluggish script by David Mamet. The script is loosely based on a 1955 Humphrey a Gart Peter Ustinov Aldo Ray film that by All accounts was t very funny either. In a nutshell Deniro and the equally Square Jawed can Penn Are convicts who break out of prison and 0 e up in a roman Catholic monastery where they come mistaken for two noted priests. Mamet the is Muc the situation though other an 0 "1ave his two principals make repeated in a nov attempts to reach the nearby Canadian r or before the prison guards Nab them. After a while you Start to wish they d make it Over the Border just so the film would end. Deniro s Talent for communicating without dialogue is Well known but Here he seems intent on parodying himself in that regard. He s usually Able to keep his penchant for facial mugging under tight control but in we re no Angels he s the original rubber faced Man. You slowly become More interested in what weird Grimace he s going to pull next than in the few banal lines he gets to Mouth. It s Clear that Deniro is using Only a fraction of his awesome Talent Here a but that s not All his fault considering the part he has to work with. Penn capable of Quality acting when he in t bouncing journalists and photographers off the Walls acquits himself reasonably Well As a somewhat shy minor league Punk but again his part hardly Calls for him to tax himself in any extensive Way. One relatively Bright spot in this muddled film is Demi Moore who gets off some Good lines As a Tough girl who does t like to do anything unless there s something in it for her preferably Money but she s in a supporting role and can t do much in the Way of carrying the film. Mamet has always struck me As something of a Poser. In interviews he likes to play the artiste ranting about the stifling restrictions of contemporary Hollywood conventionality. But then he comes up with this most conventional and pedestrian of Hollywood vehicles. It s hard to figure. Maybe he s schizophrenic. He s clearly capable of great things As he showed with the untouchables and that makes we re no Angels even More inexplicable. I count Deniro and Penn among my All time favorite actors which is probably Why i found this movie such a letdown. But they Aren t to blame. No responsibility for this mistake rests squarely on Mamet s shoulders and we re no Angels gets no More than one and a half stars out of listings to move this is the last Issue of stripes Magazine in which film reviews and photographs and the weekly listings of movies on the cafes circuit will run.
