There re the familiar High powered action scenes the overabundance of hyped up melodrama and even an Angel played by the legendary Audrey Hepburn. Richard Dreyfuss and his buddy John Goodman Are hot dogging fire jumpers pilots who Wing in Low Over the Trees to dump tanks of water on Forest blazes. Holly Hunter in a winsome performance is an air plane enthusiast in love with Dreyfuss who works the Tower at the Airfield where the fire jumpers Are based. On a particularly rough Job one Day Goodman a engines catch fire and Dreyfuss Ever the daredevil saves him by overflying his buddy and dropping his water Supply. But the Man Euver proves tragic As Dreyfuss can t pull out of his dive and goes Down in a fiery crash. When he wakes up he a sitting on a Small Patch of Green in the midst of a charred Forest and there s Hepburn to Tell him he a bought the farm. But instead of going on to heaven or wherever his soul was to go Hepburn says he has to return to Earth to be an invisible guardian Angel to a Klutzy would be Pilot newcomer Brad Johnson. Dreyfuss afterlife is complicated when Hunter Falls in love with Johnson who is so Good looking she Quot feels like she won him in a  Dreyfuss is torn Between his Mission to watch Over and guide Johnson and his jealousy about being replaced in Hunters heart. Dreyfuss is at his wisecracking Best and Goodman continues to carve a Niche As one of our top supporting actors. And Hunter just about steals the show with memorable scenes such As when her decidedly non homemaker character turns into a Kitchen whirlwind for Johnson. But there Are some negatives Here. While Speilberg makes the flying scenes gripping he seems to be stretching to fill the Long spaces in Between. There Are also some nonsensical aspects to the Story. Throughout the film Hunter s piloting skills Are shown to be shaky at Best yet near the end she jumps in the cockpit for what could turn out to be a suicide Mission to Rescue some firefighters trapped on the ground by a Forest Blaze. And anyone who has had a Chance to see a Guy named Joe which starred screen icon Spencer Tracy May feel some letdown. Spielberg a Montana locale does no to have nearly the same sense of urgency As the front lines of world War ii even though the fire jumpers profession is almost As dangerous As that of the combat aces. Still always As in the venerable tradition of Hollywood movies that put Star Power Over storyline and Speilberg s lineup Here makes this an enjoyable film. It gets three stars out of four.
