We need to Send a message that Weare not going to abandon the men and women of the military sen. John Mccain r-ariz., said Friday on the Senate floor. With cuts of 75,000 to 125,000men and women from the armed serv ices expected in just the next year we must provide a Clear Cut plan As they make the painful transition from Mili tary to civilian the plan Calls for changes in unemployment compensation separation pay relocation assistance educational Bene fits and health care. It is expected to reintroduced in the Senate this week. Under the plan people separated from the service would receive the same unemployment benefits As civilians. Civilians normally wait a week or two for 26 weeks of unemployment. But service members who leave the military must wait four weeks to be eligible for 13 weeks of unemployment. Separation pay would be granted to officers and enlisted who Are involuntarily separated after at least seven years of continuous and honorable service. The current $30,000 Cap on separation pay would not apply to either officers or enlisted. Payment amounts would be based on rank and Active duty time. Limited free leave would be granted for visits to areas where military Mem Bers would want to move after being separated. Job search and Job referral services would be offered to service members and their spouses. The proposed Bill will give those with seven years Active duty time priority placement for Federal jobs.
