   European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 06, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Sunday May 6, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 5 Ken St. Dedicates memorial to slain students Kent Phio a thousands of people lit candles in the rain Friday to dedicate a memorial to four Kent state University students slain by Ohio National guardsmen during an anti War protest 20 years ago. About 4,000 people huddled beneath umbrellas on a parking lot near the site of the shootings. They took place on May 4, 1970, and marked a tragic rallying Point for those who opposed american involvement in the Vietnam War. Most in the crowd placed lighted candles on the Hill top Granite memorial. Some placed their candles amid the 58,175 daffodils planted on the nearby Hillside for each american killed in the War. About 200 students nearby waged a silent protest by raising clenched fists and holding up handmade signs Bear ing messages of whose May 4th is it anyway and Don t minimize student  some held up two fingers v shaped in the peace sign popularized during the anti War movement. Some Kent state students have contended the univer sity s $200,000 memorial is too Little too late. Former sen. George Mcgovern d-s.d., the keynote speaker said the memorial should encourage reconciliation Between the United states and Vietnam which do not have diplomatic relations. The War in Vietnam is unfinished the unsuccessful 1972 presidential candidate said. The killing has stopped but the arrogance that produced it survives and so does the agony the guilt and the  Mcgovern Drew applause when he said the nation should never pursue military action counter to the Public sentiment. It s important to our democracy that military operations should be halted if they run counter to the wishes of the american  Florence Schroeder Mother of slain student Bill sch Roeder thanked the University for building the memorial. She was accompanied by her husband Louis. The memorial on 2 /2 acres adjacent to the parking lot where the students were killed includes a Granite Plaza with four pylons similar in shape to elongated gravestones. A smaller Waist High Marker was erected in Honor of the slain students in 1971. The families of two other slain students Allison Krause and Jeffrey Miller did not show up University spokeswoman Janet Thiede said. The parents of the fourth victim Sandra Scheuer were on Campus but did not speak at the ceremonies. Krause s Mother Doris Krause of Monroeville pa., had said she did not attend because she believed the memorial should have been bigger and built earlier. The memorial was designed by Chicago architect Bruno Dean Kahler the Only student disabled by wounds in the Kent state shooting Rolls past the new memorial. Dean Kahler who was paralysed from the Waist Down when he was wounded in the shootings said he has forgiven the guardsmen but added that the memorial s message was important. The injustices that were committed Here should never be forgotten he said. Kahler now an Athens county commissioner in South East Ohio said he could not be an angry bitter  he was the Only student disabled by his wounds. Gov. Richard Celeste read the dead students names and said each time i am  i Felt disbelief that we had turned our weapons on our own  the governor at the time of the shootings was James a. Rhodes who ordered the National guard to restore order on the Campus after an Roth building was set on fire in protest against the . Invasion of Cambodia. He later signed a statement along with National guardsmen expressing regret. Shortly after the shootings a Portage county special grand jury found that the guardsmen acted in self defense and exonerated them of criminal charges. In March 1974, a Federal grand jury in Cleveland indicted eight guardsmen on charges of violating the civil rights of the dead and wounded students. A judge later dismissed the charges for Lack of evidence. University president Michael Schwartz said Rhodes and the guardsmen involved in the shootings had not been individually invited to the dedication. A a computer expert who created a worm program that paralysed thousands of computers nationwide was placed on three years probation Friday and fined $10,000. . District judge Howard Munson also ordered 25-year-old Robert t. Morris to perform 400 hours of Community service. Prosecutors had asked Munson to order the Maxi mum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 Fine. They sought at least some jail time for the former Cornell University graduate student. Defense attorney David o Brien said Morris was too decent a kid to be sentenced to jail. There is a world of difference Between what Robert did and what others who have used this technology did o Brien said noting that Morris did not Benefit from his actions. Morris did not speak at the sentencing or talk to reporters after the hearing. He remained grim faced through most of the hearing then cracked a wide smile and hugged his Mother when the sentence was announced. Morris parents said they were pleased with the sen tence. We love our son he s a great kid Anne Morris said. We wish that this last year and a half had been different for him but we re weathering it and so is  mrs. Morris said the experience had made her son More responsible. In january Morris became the first person to be convicted under the 1986 computer fraud and abuse act for breaking into a Federal computer network and preventing authorized use of the system. He created the worm program while at Cornell University in Ithaca on nov. 2, 1988. Morris formerly of Arnold md., and now living in Cambridge mass., testified during his trial that the worm was an Experiment that went out of control be cause of a programming error he made. He admitted he designed the worm to invade the internet system but said it was t supposed to replicate wildly As it did. Prosecutors disagreed. During the trial they de scribed Morris Experiment As a full scale assault that was methodically planned. They said Morris also took deliberate Steps to make the worm difficult to Trace and eradicate. Sands time Everglades fire controlled after burning 25,000 acres 40/earsagotoday.in the stars and stripes Miami a firefighters said Fri Day they had controlled the fire that has blackened 25,000 acres of the drought Crisp Everglades. Fire had raced across the dry grass lands and leaped a canal but was beaten Back before reaching a levee. The levee was the last natural Barrier Between the flames and the sprawling big Cypress National wildlife preserve. Shortly after 5 p.m., the fire was re ported under control said Peter Karayeanes duty officer for the state Divi Sion of forestry. The area would be monitored in Case of flare  he said. A heavy downpour around noon Fri Day missed the Center of the fire but helped firefighters trying to control the last area of violent burning. Although arson has not been ruled out investigators believe the fire was sparked accidentally in an area frequented by people on motorcycles and All terrain vehicles. Despite the size of the scorched area about 25 Miles West of downtown Miami wildlife officials say the fire has had Little effect on animals. No injuries have been reported from the fire and no inhabited areas were threatened by the Blaze one of three West of Miami. Another fire in Everglades National Park about 25 Miles Southwest of the City scorched 10,500 acres by Friday but firefighters were confident they could control it by saturday said Park spokeswoman Darlene Koontz.
