European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 30, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Mick Jagger pull out All the stops in through Europe it s not just a concert tour its an event. Amid much Media fanfare the rolling stones kicked off their first european tour in eight years in Rotterdam Netherlands May 18. As the legendary group barrels its Way through 12 countries in the next 2vi months an estimated 2 million fans will pay homage to the bad boys of Rock n Roll. The stones keep up their end of the Deal. They be pulled out All the stops to provide the ultimate in sight and sound. More than 700 people work at each of the 43 shows transforming football stadiums into miniature cities. About 220 set up the stage a a steel Behemoth that looms some 82 feet into the sky and comes Complete with an elevator video screens inflatable props and assorted pyrotechnic Al gizmos. But those Are just the facts. What counts is the Rock a no Roll and most people Are bound to like it. The stones have chosen a base of about 36 songs Ron Wood keeps his Cool. Stories and photos by Anita Gosch from throughout their 27-year career. Of those they perform about 24 each night in varying order. And although they re touring their latest album steel wheels the stones have selected Only a handful of new songs for their european concerts. They stick with tried and True favourites for the rest of the 21a-Hourshow. It was those favourites that received the biggest applause at the Wald station in Frankfurt West Germany sunday. And it was in those older songs that the stones Best recaptured the old sense of rebellion. After opening with the rocking Start me up amid a Wall of flame and a Cloud of billowing smoke the show lost some of its momentum and lumbered on tamely through much of the first half. Even Mick Jagger strutting prancing and pouting As usual seemed a Tad bored. The show picked up tremendously Midway with Honky Tonk women. The evening became a communal sing along As the fans a Many not yet born when the stones started their career a Sang nearly every word to such classics As paint it Black and you can to always get what you want. Visual highlights came with the appearance of two 60-foot inflatable women wearing world cup outfits and kicking soccer balls during Honky Tonk women and four giant menacing hellhound that framed the stage during Street fighting Man. Musically some of the Best numbers were sympathy for the Devil during which Jagger appeared at the top of the stage set High above the crowd Keith Richards tune Happy which ended with blistering guitar work and the three song finale of Brown sugar i can t get no satisfaction certainly the shows biggest crowd please and jumping Jack Flash. Oddly Gimme shelter one of the great Rock songs received Little applause.
