Meyner a country lawyer who became new Jersey s first governor elected to successive four year terms has died after a Long illness. He was 81. Meyner who gained National attention during his terms in office from 1954 to 1962, had been in declining health since suffering a stroke in 1986. He died in his sleep at his Home in Captiva. Fla., said his wife Helen. He lived a very full Rich life giving an awful lot to a lot of people mrs. Meyner said Mon Day by Telephone from Captiva. A Democrat Meyner campaigned tirelessly to win the slate s highest office at a time when republicans dominated state government he was the first democratic governor since 1940. Stunt plane crash at show in Alabama kills Pilot Tuskegee. Ala. A a stunt plane crashed in flames while trying a rollover a never during an air show killing the Pilot As 1,000 stunned spectators watched authorities said. Burglars steal $250,000 from atm in Manhattan new York up burglars broke into two automatic Teller machines at a chemical Bank Branch in Manhattan stealing More than $250,000, police said. California but too late to help with drought los Angeles a an unseasonable rainstorm dumped record rain monday on Southern California which is in the fourth year of a drought snarling traffic and contributing to two deaths. But the rain came too late to help with the drought. Warm weather will cause it largely to evaporate rather than percolate into the soil. The storm dropped an Inch of rain on los Angeles the National weather service said. The previous Highway 28 precipitation was 0.12 of an Inch in 1971. The Santa Monica freeway through downtown Losangeles was closed for several hours during the night by flooding and two lanes of the Harbor freeway was closed during the morning by a mudslide. A California Highway patrol spokesman said debris and trash had collected in storm drains because so much time had passed since the last storm. The tax hike proposition 111, is backed by a bipartisan coalition of government business and labor interests who forged the plan to combat deepening transportation woes. With less than two weeks before voting the tax hike backers internal polls showed a seven Point Lead com pared with a 13-Point margin in an Independent poll taken in Early May according to published reports. Supporters say the Gas tax increase is needed because Road and rail construction have lagged in the face of rising population.
