European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 31, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Ann Landers dear Ann Landers a few Days ago a woman phoned and announced that shews the daughter i had put up for adoption Many years ago. She tried to be non threatening and sounded like a Nice person but iwas absolutely stunned. Old heartaches and fear overwhelmed me. She asked if i wanted to see her. When i said no she poli Tely rang off. I sat by the phone shaking for 30 minutes. I made a mistake when i was Young and i suffered for it. I never told a soul about the child i had. It was my intention to take the secret to my grave. Can you imagine the pain of telling a thing like that to your husband children grandchildren nieces nephews and friends i Don t think i could have live through it. Please advise people who assist in such searches to find another Hobby. Inform those wrongheaded do goobers who reveal confidential information that it i highly unethical and probably illegal and it can do incalculable damage. I can appreciate people s curiosity about their biological parents but i beg them to consider our right to keep this part of our lives secret. Although the woman who phoned seemed perfectly Content to leave Mealone i have no Assurance that she will. I now live in fear that she might appear at my door. That Telephone Call has forever changed my life an robbed me of my peace of mind. No one has the right to visit this kind of hell on another person. Please says Ann. Dear Iowa petrified Iowa i have said so in my column repeatedly but thank for the Opportunity to say it again. Adopted children should have Access to the health histories of their biological parents especially if there Are abnormalities that May be genetic. But it should end there. No one has the right to disrupt lives and cause the kind of anguish you described. Dear Ann Landers i be been Reading your column since i was 14. Now As a 38-year-old woman May i put in my 2 cents Worth to the women out there so Many problems especially with men can be avoided or at least minimized by using common sense. First get a Good education. Even being a High school graduate is something to be proud of. Second acquire Job skills. Save some Money. Get your own credit. I see so Many uneducated women who never Learned to do anything get married without a dime to their names and expect men to take care of them. It makes me crazy to listen to those women who after 20 or 30 years of being a housewife suddenly divorce or become widowed and have nothing to fall Back on. A woman who can support herself never need worry about being a destitute also does t have to stay in a Rotten marriage because she has nowhere to go. I graduated from High school joined the army Learned a variety of Job skills saved Money retire from the army and am now self employed. I be had two marriages one divorce two kids handsome trying times along the Way but i never worried about not having a Job or being broke. And being retired from the army i la have Money coming in for the rest of my life and free medical care As Well. The Bottom line is to look ahead and plan for your future. M.g., stars and stripes Reader dear is what sound advice and a great testimonial for the armed services. I m pleased to print it. Creators Syndicate More thoughts on where tax dollars go Page 11 letters in response to the recent letter thoughts on where tax dollars go i Felt compelled to offer my thoughts. No one has definitive answers to these questions but Afree Exchange of ideas is always helpful. On the savings and loan bailouts. The reason behind this can basically be assigned to two categories malfeasance and mismanagement. In the first in stance California s Lincoln savings being a ready example the associations Are in trouble due to the Crim Inal conduct of so managers. In the second poor business decisions Are the controlling factors. An a Lis much like a Small business thousands of which fail each year. Every manager is not a financial Genius what seemed a Good investment last year May be this year s should the person who invested his Money therefore be penalized for the Lack of profit our Federal govern ment has increasingly turned from what i feel it s main purpose is the safeguarding of the individual freedoms of the citizenry and become More concerned with protecting the Standard of living. Therefore a sound moral basis has been Laid for the expenditure offends for this. On the Rise in state taxes. It is obvious that with deficit which reached $ 1 trillion in the Reagan Era the Federal government must scale Back spending. The Only alternative to reduced spending is increased in come. Whether through increased income taxes or a National value added tax this is a political liability for either party. Given then that spending reductions Are necessary should these reductions come solely from those pro Grams which Are the exclusive province of the Federal government or should they be shared by state run programs whose funding is supplemented by the Feder Al government in All fairness the Burden of austerity must be equally shared by the states most of which Are in much sounder financial shape than the Federal government. For the first time in a generation or More worldwide movement for personal Freedom is afoot. Given the imminent collapse of both european Security alliances nato and the Warsaw pact and the change of governments in Eastern Europe Only the most die hard Hawks will fail to realize that the defense needs and overseas commitments necessary for the United states have been drastically altered. Since the threat has been reduced our capacity for War waging needs to be reduced commensurately. To avoid the tragic mistakes of the Post Vietnam demobilization the hollow army feel that these cuts should come from big ticket hardware items. What Good will it do to have the Best tank in the world without a Well trained Crew to Man it foreign Aid i take As one subject but Only in the sense that a Hydra is one animal. The Many Heads need to be treated individually but with the common aim the same the furthering of our National objectives. As for the emerging democracies of the Eastern bloc their needs and consequently our responses Are Sim Ilar Money. Historically the United states has influenced the internal affairs of other nations in sever always. The first military intervention was used most recently in Panama with mixed results. The second Way has been through diplomacy. Whether this pres sure has led to the collapse of the Eastern bloc is now a moot Point. This will neither revitalize a stagnant Economy nor put food in an empty stomach. The third Way we have influenced others is by our economic might. This is the Type of help that is most needed by these nations. We have sown the seeds Fortis intervention for Over 200 years since we first began intervening in others affairs in the name of democracy. In doing so we have saddled ourselves with the role of the kindly Uncle to the world. Enow face having to pay the Price for this. To turn Down the requests for Aid from these formerly communist countries would be to basically refute 200 years of policy. How to address the problems underlying the Trade imbalance does one blame this on the restrictive import Laws of countries such As Japan or does one blame a Lack of Quality in american made goods the fair Trade act has addressed the former with some improvements being made. The second is eve now a headache for corporate America again with improvements being made. One Way to help is by As sisting the development of these newly emerging democracies of Eastern Europe. By getting them on around financial basis we will be opening up new Trade markets for ourselves thereby offsetting any imbalances from others. As i said no one has All the answers but i Hope this letter will make others Stop and think about the Multi tude of problems confronting us today. Sgt. Randolph s. Phillips Wurzburg West Germany contractors reap benefits Reader says the recent article concerning the payment of . Income taxes by Naf non appropriated fund employees was interesting. But there Are literally thou Sands of government employees around the world not paying . Income taxes or taxes to the country i which they Are working. They have commissary Exchange and any other privileges granted to military or civil service employees. I am speaking of military contractors employed by the . Military under contract to the . Govern ment. They Are even assigned is general schedule grades of gs-13 and above while doing the work of gs-7s or e-5s and e-6s, for the most part. The article pointed out the reason Naf employees were paying . Income taxes was that the foreign earned income exclusion credit was designed to protect overseas americans who work for foreign companies from being taxed twice by the Host country and the United states. How did this group contractors escape All taxes forthe last 25 years How will the irs official explain this oversight if the Law was never meant to allow someone to exploit a Legal loophole after All for All practical purposes contractors Are government employees paid by government funds granted government privileges is Grade Given every privilege of a government employee except for paying taxes.
