   European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 31, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Thursday May 31, 1990 the stars and stripes prep Pickin s Dodds 89-90 slides into history another year of Dodds sports came to a conclusion saturday with the staging of the big schools and Small schools soccer tournaments and the Central european gymnastics championships. The Wiesbaden boys and Heidelberg girls won the big schools soccer titles shape s boys and Munich s girls prevailed in the Small schools realm. Wiesbaden did t loom As potential champions in regular season strife finishing fifth in the aaa standings with a 1-4-1 Mark. But the warriors Quali fied among the top four in the conference tournament and then won impressively in the big schools meet at Ramstein. They beat a runner up Wei Brincken and aaa third place Heidelberg in the first Day s Competition and then stunned a Champion Pitburg which had sailed through the Campaign unscathed to take the laurels. Munich s boys were supposed to be the top dogs in the Small schools meet but shape surprised them in the Pool Competition and the spartans went on to whip Brussels in the title game. The Heidelberg and Munich girls were supposed to win and they prevailed by completing undefeated campaigns. Ramstein s Heather Forbes continued to Domi Nate the senior gymnastics. She triumphed at every station As she won her third straight senior optional All around title. Earlier last week two records fell As the Central european meet at Augsburg wrapped up the track and Field Competition. Wiesbaden s Trina Lattany took a tenth of a second off the 400-meter record with a 57.7 clocking and the Fulda sprint Medley team took a tenth of a second off the old 3 34.1 time. A third record was established a week earlier in the a qualifying when Niernberg s Tarreka Smith turned in a 5-foot, 4%-Inch High jump. So the Only thing remaining to put the icing on the cake is the selection of the stars and stripes athletes of the year. The in office deadline is saturday. Dodds Germany sports coordinator Tom Leb Lanc and Frankfurt football and track coach Charlie Toth have agreed to serve on the committee with me to make the selections. Several athletic directors called to report that their schools had made selections for their athletes of the year but that they would t be submitting any Nomi nations for is recognition because they Felt their athletes did t meet the higher standards associated with Europe wide recognition by the is panel. Exactly a year ago Rodger Bowman passed away. Bowman was involved in Dodds coaching Only a Short time but his Impact was a Strong one on Patch High school football. His first team As varsity coach won Only one game but the next year the panthers posted a 5-2 record. He had gained in that Short time the respect of the Community the Patch athletes and other Dodds coaches. Bowman s achievements at Patch will be Long remembered. Dedication ceremonies renaming the Patch High school athletic Field Bowman Field were scheduled for thursday by Bowman s Vaihinger Community friends. The dedication also will Honor All other volunteers in the Community. Bowman s widow Beverly and his children Tim Ashley and Marcus flew in from the states wednesday for the ceremony. It is indeed a fitting tribute to a Man who contributed so much to a Community in such a Short time. Space and time problems necessitated omitting the Small schools All tournament soccer team from sunday s editions. So better late than never Here they Are the boys squad is composed of shape s Lars Riis Claus Jensen and Bill Bourland Munich s Ryan Vienes Andy Reardon and Dan Levasseur Bonn s Saif Maiga and Jared Hughlett Ulm s Rich Ard Ward Brussels John Ryall and osterholz Pat Rick Donalds. Others selected to the squad were ans Bach s Scott new Marcus Novachek and Chuck Renshaw Augsburg s Greg Ernst Steve Melito and Rich Brolly Bamberg s Jimmy Saraglow Steve ptas Nik and Nathan Dall and Vilseck s James Rush and Andy Romero. Hahn enjoyed the Only monopoly when the final standings for the Dodds Germany All sports trophy Winner were determined following the completion of regular season Competition. The i Hawks won the a North laurels the boys chalking up 605 Points to beat out Berlin by 10 and the girls enjoying a 590-555 advantage Over Giessen. The Baum older girls and Giessen boys placed third. The aaa accolades went to the Wiesbaden girls 550 and Frankfurt boys 570respectively. Heidel Berg was second in both divisions and Ramstein was third in each category. The Patch girls 545 and Pitburg boys 585 beat out Mannheim and Nurnberg in each a group. The Bonn and Karlsruhe girls notched 495 Points apiece to share the a Central honors. Fulda was third. Bad Kreuz Nach won the boys Competition with 575 Points. Fulda and Karlsruhe trailed. The Munich boys matched Hahn s 605 total As the Best in Germany to take the a South Crown and beat out Ansbach and Vilseck. In the girls Competition Vilseck won with 525 and Munich and Augsburg followed the Mustangs.
