European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 25, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Sarafina a simple but tragic tale of apartheid by de Reavis staff writer they loved it. They clapped their hands and stomped their feet. They cheered. Sarafina the Black South african musical thrilled the audience in Frankfurt West Germany with its dynamic premiere performance earlier this month. Politics terror and racism Are the main ingredients of Sarafina based on an idea by Winnie Mandela wife of p the african anti apartheid activist Nelson Mandela Sarafina is billed As the first Quot anti apartheid it was written by Mongeni Ogema and scored by Hugh Masakela. The Story of Sarafina is As simple As it is tragic. Sarafina is the name of the most popular student at the Morris Isaacson High school in the township Soweto. The musical follows her and her fellow students As they become involved in the struggle for equal rights. Soweto or South West township is a giant Black ghetto near Johannesburg where the 1976 anti apartheid uprising began. Before the uprising was quelled More than 467 persons were killed. Sarafina depicts that struggle and shows the transformation of Black South african schoolchildren to militant civil rights and Freedom fighters. Their hero is the former political prisoner Nelson Mandela a co chairman of the african National Congress who has become a kind of Black Moses for Black South african Hopes and Faith in a Freedom soon to come. The stage backdrop for Sarafina evokes militant oppression with its Fence topped with barbed wire. Behind the Fence Are a tank searchlights and 10 armed uniformed soldiers who double As the band. Sarafina is imprisoned after the school is invaded by the township police and students Are shot for protesting the government decision to substitute afrikaans for English language classes. Later she is freed and returns to school not broken but steeled in her conviction to fight for the end of apartheid. She becomes the Leader of the uprising and even plays Mandela in a school play delivering one of his stirring speeches. As the students find their Way Back to their roots during the course of the musical they discard their Western style school uniforms and Don National costumes for the rousing finale Freedom is coming tomorrow. The music in Sarafina ranges from a rocking jazz reggae gospel sound to the Folk rhythms of Zulu dances. Sarafina originally opened in the Market Garden theatre in Johannesburg South Africa in 1987. A co production went on the Road while another went to new York where it has won audience and critical acclaim Over the last three years. The musical is still being staged in new York. After Mandela s recent release from prison after 27 years the musical shifted its emphasis from militant confrontation to an Appeal for finding racial Harmony in South Africa based on the slogan Quot one Man one on june 11, the Sarafina troupe went to Bonn West Germany to support a Public rally for Mandela who came to convince the West German government not to drop their economic and military sanctions of South Africa. It was the first time members of the troupe actually saw Mandela and several of them broke Down in tears. Sarafina is playing in Cologne West Germany for the next two weeks. It will then go to Munich. Check with local tourist offices for More information.
