European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 6, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Neptune s revenge misery and fun on the North sea fishing in Europe by Ken Clauson Bremerhaven Bureau a Captain Otto Wille looked at me with a knowing smile when i stepped out for Quot fresh i had tried for a half hour to stand upright in the pilothouse of the Jan Cux an 85-foot charter Bost. It was just past 9 . On a Windy Cloudy North sea sunday and we were looking for fish. Neptune was stirring and so was my stomach. I was there to add the deep sea experience to my fishing memories. My shipmates were 40 american soldiers and family members from Berlin a sergeant and his wife from Wiesbaden and the trip organizer from Bremerhaven s outdoor recreation office. We took a bus from Bremerhaven to Cuxhaven a Small town at the Mouth of the Elbe River where we boarded the charter boat. The Jan Cux pulled from the Dock at 7 30 ., heading out to sea. Breakfast was served almost immediately. The fishermen were boisterous As they wolfed Down Salami eggs breach and Coffee served by the Crew. Some augmented that menu with Beer Fried Chicken and barbequed ribs from their own larders. Breakfast done we settled in for the ride to a Point near Helgoland a tiny North sea Island about 40 Miles to the Northeast a few cracked jokes about seasickness but Lhost of the berliners Felt confident in the anti nausea patches pasted under their ears like Little flesh coloured bandages. The idea of refreshing Ocean air and sea Spray in my face lured me onto the deck. The swells were deepening though and i began to get wet so i joined the Captain in the minutes i had to look up to see the tops of the swells and i could t stand without hanging on to something. Waves burst Over the Bow and splashed hard on the window but Wille easily rocked Back ant Forth his right hand on a window Frame. His left hand rested on the throttle housing where the brass was worn and shiny from his touch. The ship seemed to Rock swiftly but smoothly under the Captain s feet. Under my feet the floor shuddered and pitchedwi1dly, so 1 gripped the Edge of a shelf and told myself that his easy balance was just a matter of finding the rhythm. I tried to find by staring out the window but there win t much to see through the sheets of water that poured Down the Glass. I caught glimpses of the Bow rapidly rising and tailing in a Wall of water that was higher than the ship at the suggestion that the sea was a bit rough Wile laughed. Quot no it cod be after a half hour of this carnival ride the air seemed. Stale in the Cabin and i could no longer ignore the sensation of a Snake stirring in my stomach.
