European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 6, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Hooked on Denmark the author casts for Trout in a shallow Broad River near Skjerne fishing there is top s&5 Susan Harris by Norm Zeigler travel outdoor writer a thin White Mist Rose from the River. A pair of mallards flew Low overhead the Hen quacking loudly As they went past and scaled in downriver. Everywhere Trout were rising some of them leaping Clear of the water to snatch insects out of the air. I picked out an expanding ring about 20 feel upriver and flipped out a no 12 mayfly. It landed about a Yard above the spot where the fish had surfaced floated downstream a couple of feel and then disappeared in a splash of Spray As the Trout smashed it. I yanked up on the Rod to set the Hook and the tip Bent Down in a Sharp curve As the fish took off first zigzagging across the current and then rocketing into the air to Tai walk across the surface of the water. After a couple of minutes fight i eased the fish in to the Edge of the Bank. It was a Beautiful Little Rainbow about 10 or 11 inches. Its Silvery Pink sides flashed in the disappearing Light As i removed the Hook from the Corner of its jaw. When i slipped it Back into the water it hesitated in the shallows for a couple of seconds fanning its Gills and resting among the Reeds and then it shot out into the current and disappeared. I dried the Fly with a couple of false casts and picked out another Riser to cast to. This was Trout fishing As fast As it gets. The place was Denmark s Veale Kiver a Clear smooth flowing Stream that meanders Down through the Hills of Eastern Jutland to empty into the Baltic sea at the City of Veale. On its Way to the sea the River flows through some of the loveliest Countryside in Denmark Hardwood forests Green Meadows and hillsides purple with Heather. I was fishing a Section of the Veale near Ringsted about 10 Miles upstream from the Mouth. In this area the River is 25 to 30 feet wide deep and Placid. The Bottom is mostly Sandy and firm but except for a few places along the Banks it is too deep to Wade. Fortunately for by casters it is bordered mainly by open pastures though Here and there giant Oki Oaks or Brushy Willows overhang the shallows in Short the River is Ideal Trout habitat and the Prool was in the action. In a Little More than two hours 1 had caught and released seven rainbows and six Browns had at least that Many on the Hook and lost them and missed another dozen that had struck too Short or that i had mistimed when setting the Hook. I hooked and lost another fish and paused to warm my hands. It had been a Beautiful Spring Day with temperatures in the High fios but with the coming of dusk the thermometer had plummeted you could see it in the Mist that formed As the rapidly Cooling air contacted the warmer water. On the horizon the Sun was disappearing behind Iron Gray Clouds Bac lighting them Orange and red. A Little while later the first stars began appearing and it was time to return to the tent and crawl into a Chilly steeping bag. T Hough it was mid May the temperature would drop into the Low 40s under Tbell Clear sky. The idea behind lie hip had been to Sample some of Denmark s varied fishing opportunities on a limited budget f Ishing is a National pastime i continued on / age in it a _.
