European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 6, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Continued from Page 9 Chunky 11 Inch Brown. For the next couple of hours the fishing was great. The River sparkled in sunlight that streamed Down through holes in the Cloud cover. And the Trout were gorging themselves on the ephemeral insects that were emerging to pair up and reproduce their kind in the Brief Span before they died stoneflies caddis mayflies. The Best artificial seemed to be Gray or Gray Brown Gray Dun Adams Gray ghost. I hooked and lost a couple of hefty rainbows then landed another about 16 inches. One time i hooked a Little 7-Inch Rainbow that skipped briefly across the water then shot frantically past my legs. Close behind in hot Pursuit was a Trout As Long As my Arm. A Short while later i met two dutch fishermen. They were eager to talk with an american and one reminisced fondly about fishing the Yellowstone River in Montana. He raised his eyebrows at my ancient 1972 $25 , bean Fly Rod but laughed knowingly when i said Quot it still catches fish Quot he had fished the Vve Isser Traun Many times above hungry Trout were feeding on these flies which spend most of their lives underwater As larvae. Left River keeper Alois Blaschke crouches while reaching for a fish. Before and called it Quot a very Good the name Weisser Means White in germane said comes from the fact that the River does not get Muddy after a rain. Quot this is a Snow River Quot he said. Quot when you have a River that feeds from rain it gets Brown. The Only color this River gets is White Quot after a break for dinner i went Back to the River again. It had turned into a Beautiful dear evening with sunbeams streaming through the Trees and the air Cooling rapidly. There were plenty of fish rising but this time they would t touch any of the flies they had been crazy about just a couple of hours before. I waded across the River and along a gravel bar to a line of 6 to 8-foot boulders. The water bubbled through narrow sluices Between the rocks smoothing out behind them into deep Placid pools. In the deep water big fish waited below the gaps leisurely snatching bugs that were practically tunnelled into their Mouths. I cautiously flicked out a Gray Dun watched a 16-Incher float up to look it Over slowly turn away and sink Back Down As the Fly drifted on past. There were five or six other Good sized fish in the pocket and others were cruising the Edge of the fast water where it swept past the line of boulders. I changed lies a couple of times getting the same response. The fish were feeding on one. Specific Type of insect but in the fading Light i could not make out the Hatch. Finally two drowned flies floated by within a foot of my boots. I scooped them up and saw the reason Why my flies were not getting any action. The bugs were All Black. That is Why the fish were ignoring the Gray or Gray Brown artificial i had been using. I had even tried a yellow one. I quickly switched to a Black Fly and on the first cast a 16-Inch Rainbow smashed it. It put up a hard five minute Battle but uncharacteristically for a Rainbow did not break the surface. I Slid the fish across the surface of the water to my hand taking care to remove the Fly gently and quickly. For the next half hour until Sunset the action was super. One 16-Incher i caught jumped five times. If you Are a Trout Fisherman you owe it to yourself to fish the Weisser Traun at least once during your european tour.
