Page 11 letters a no feels set should be fixed retained dear Ann Landers a lot of people have opinions about the legalization of drugs. Unfortunately the ones no have a right to be heard cannot speak. They Are the children who a Are born addicted. Too bad the newborns can to Tell us what its like to go into convulsions and Shock and cardiac arrest. They Are authorities on the hours of endless crying and shaking thanks to their mothers use of recreational drugs. They know How it feels to be on a heart Monitor for the first 18 months to two years of their lives never knowing if they Are going to reach their first birthday or their second a or third. If mothers drug of Choice was pop or Ltd the hellish flashbacks could go on for several years. And what about the Little ones who were institutionalized and can never learn and the slowness of the a a Lucky ones who can Jeam but will always be several years behind their Peers who will speak for these pathetic children who Are paying the Price for something that Wasny to their fault i know a Little about this subject because i adopted one of these children and am going through the agony and pain right along with him. The worst part of it All is that these babies were not wanted and there Arentt enough people who will take them in. The people who need to see this letter never will but i Hope you will print it anyway. Thank you Ann. A Burbank dear Burbank your contribution to today a column is another excellent argument against the legalization of drugs. Thank you for a very moving letter. Dear Ann Landers whenever i read your column i am heartened by your understanding of Peoples difficulties and the Way you try to help them. A this mornings recommendation a talk to your Clur Gyman a was not the first time that i have noticed your use of the title which perpetuates the no longer appropriate stereotype that members of the clergy Are exclusively male. There Are clergy women who serve in the United Church of Christ and the episcopal lutheran presbyterian american Baptist and Christian disciples churches. There Are even female rabbis. So will you please Stop using the term a a Clergyman i find it offensive. A the Rev. Is. Laurie . Aleona Capitol Hill United methodist Church Seattle dear Rev. Aleona thanks for the comeuppance. In be been called on the carpet for this by other readers and i shall make an Effort to shake the old habit. Dear Ann Landers a while Back you devoted an entire column to warning readers about phony organizations that claim to be raising Money to help people who have cancer. Now hear this an Illinois Charity called the National children a cancer society inc. Raised $9 million and spent $8.2 million on salaries expenses and fund raising serv ices. The attorney general Neil Hartigan has filed a civil racketeering suit against this outfit based in Edwardsville 111. And is throwing the Book at them. Please Ann warn your kindhearted readers once again to give Money Only to those organizations they know Are legitimate. . In Peoria dear Peoria you did a and i thank you. Should we be eliminating the skills qualification test for specialists and below in the army i think not. I have been a Section sergeant for several years and have served in the army about eight years. To me one of the key indicators for evaluating the training of your soldiers is by the set Given annually to soldiers. As a private first class i averaged 70 percent on my set As a specialist i averaged 80 percent and Ever since i became an no i have maintained scores in the 90s. As my experience with the different types of equipment grew so did Rny knowledge and my scores on the can Tell when soldiers do not understand their equipment or Are not working with the equipment they Are being tested on every year. As leaders we use the set As a tool to select our top notch soldiers for promotion and special considerations. We Are Given a list of the soldiers weak areas and can determine where the general Soldier requires More training. I am the first to admit that the set has a lot of problems. It is not Given to All soldiers and it is hard to make one test for an mos that has hundreds of types of equipment in it. But it is at least a Start a Way of giving the supervisor something to work with some sets Are too specific some Are too general some have questions about things you have never heard or seen and some Are taken straight out of the books. Personally i feel they should be designed by the unit you Are in approved by the proponent Agency or school and in elude hands on testing in some Moss. I feel the opposite about eliminating sets for skill Levels one and giving leadership tests to skill Levels two through tour. Leadership is displayed not tested on paper. Leaders should be evaluated on the performance of their soldiers not entirely on themselves. Skill Levels two and three Are your instructors. They Are primarily responsible for the training in a unit. Skill Levels tour and five Are responsible for ensuring that the sergeants and staff sergeants Are competently trained and that training is being conducted in the unit properly. I feel that All soldiers staff sergeant skill level three and below should be tested according to their appropriate Moss with the equipment being used in their unit. Sergeant first class and first sergeants skill Levels four and five should be evaluated on the basis of their soldiers. Soldiers could Register their platoon sergeants and above with the testing Agency and those skill Levels four and five would be awarded the average score for their soldiers in their particular unit or element. This i am writing this letter to All of our readers who Are opposed to the apartheid regime of South Africa and who also happen to be investors in Mutual funds stocks Bonds Etc. Please read your annual reports carefully. Last week while reviewing the annual report of the Cornerstone fund usaa group i was shocked to learn that the management company had recently decided to invest in South african Gold mines. I immediately made a phone Call to a representative of the company who after gathering facts from her superiors informed me that the decision was made primarily because Gold mines in the other parts of the world in which Cornerstone funds were invested were not doing As Well As those in South Africa. Ensures that soldiers stay proficient and that supervisors have a vested interest in training. By eliminating the set for skill level one you Are not increasing time for sergeants to train their soldiers but rather decreasing the concentration on that vital training and increasing self improvement and knowledge by itself. I am a firm believer that some cos need great self improvement but not at the expense of the Soldier. This should be the Rispon Sibily of the supervisor above him her. Work the bugs out of the Sot do not eliminate it. Done to Cut the leg off to Stop the bleeding apply the needed pressure. What arc those specialists going to do for those needed 200 Points on the promotion Board Cut common tasks training pet army physical fitness training and weapons qualification can not be the Only evaluators to use in judging soldiering proficiency. I agree that Sot time is always a dreaded time difficult to cram mos knowledge into a few weeks prior. The soldiers arc taken from the unit during a couple of Days each year but it is Worth it. Give that sergeant the time he needs to train and be trained. Check on the training and it could Benefit you in the end. A a. Let the sergeant do his Job by keeping the paper Fishers and Mission thinkers away. Help the doers Cam their Job so that when they arc cos they Are not incompetent trainers who have to cram years of knowledge in after a slap to the Collar. Leaders arc not made overnight or the second they throw on some stripes. They arc grown groomed watered and Cal a cd. Done to eliminate that tool of evaluation it is needed. Most soldiers hate the set and will probably disagree with me. But think about it a it is actually Worth it plus where Are you going to make up the 200 Points during promotion it Isnit perfect but it is at least a Start. Use it As a tool and in this Day of cutbacks and Competition it is a Good indicator of a Good Soldier. If there is an untrained Soldier or one who docs not know his Job and Mission then i want to know now so 1 can try to help him before he is an no. It is too late when the worm has Slid into a set of stripes. It is not that easy to Correct the damage and too late for prevention. Come on cos make the policy makers ask for our thoughts before they implement policy without thinking. Sir you do have a voice out Here. Why not ask us what we think there is a lot of experience and knowledge out with Good cos. Try one you might like it. A staff sgt. Michael j. Duguid Karlsruhe West Germany clearly this was a sound move financially. However As a member of the armed forces of the United states As an african american and As a responsible world citizen i refuse to make financial gains at the expense of the oppressed people of South Africa. To divest at this Point Means that i will have to pay taxi s on the Money received from the redemption of my shares. However that is a Small Price to pay to avoid supporting that evil system of government. I am currently in the process of exploring investment opportunities with socially conscious organizations and i urge everyone of conscience to do the same. A capt. Katherine s.
